"Another day, another pain," sighed Alecia as she walked into the small home, soon to be greeted by the cold air, causing a small shiver to go through her thin body. "¡Aye esté hombre viejo! He still hasn't came?" Alecia thought as she moved a brown lock of hair behind her ear," I've sent him a note to come fix the heater and yet nothing. One simple job is all I asked for." Alecia's thoughts were disrupted as her sense of smell was overcome by the scent of multiple spices and a warm welcome beckoning her. She walked into the kitchen to find her eldest daughter, Zaraí, cooking. Zaraí's chestnut hair hid the hair tie she wore to hold her hair back in a messy bun. Zaraí softly hummed to her favorite song, "I Bet My Life" by Imagine Dragons, as she cooked, unaware of the pair of caramel eyes that watched in silence. It wasn't until the youngest, Ellie, decided to come in screeching a hello to both her mother and sister, causing both Alecia and Zaraí to jump.
"Ellie!" Zaraí screamed. "I almost dropped the bowls!" Zaraí turned around to introduce two bowls full of warm soup, prepared and ready to serve and eat.
Ellie pouted. "It was only a joke, y'know I wouldn't do anything to cause any real harm," Ellie explained as she took a bowl with her plump, tan hands, setting it on the table. Ellie went to the drawer to pull out 3 spoons, handing them out as if she was handing lollipops to children.
"One for you," she said with a wide smile as she handed a spoon to her mother, who looked very thankful. She hesitated to give one to her sister, "Should I give you one? I mean, like, you were mean to me earlier."
"If you were the best little sister in the whole wide world you'd give me the spoon," Zaraí said as she sounded as miserable as possible, though her cobalt blue eyes showed a hint of a mischievous glint in them. Ellie took the bait and gave her the spoon, but not without letting a small," fine."
Zaraí's face gave off a look of pure happiness. She tightly hugged her little sister, ruffling her sandy blonde hair before letting go. Their mother looked at the two with great love and admiration in her worn out eyes, thankful to have these two in her life.
-Time Skip 3 Hours-
After all was finished and the kitchen was cleaned, they all left to their bedrooms to finally rest. Zaraí and Ellie shared a cramped room that they always kept clean. The room wasn't very large or very decorative, but both Zaraí and Ellie didn't care because they were happy with what they had, even if it didn't seem like much. Alecia's bedroom was a tad bit bigger than Zaraí's and Ellie's room. Alecia always said that Zaraí and Ellie should sleep in the bigger room since it fit both of them, but Zaraí and Ellie always said the same answer; "No, you need the space."
Zaraí was brushing her cream colored teeth as Alecia was drying her wet coffee colored hair, as Alecia had just finished showering. Zaraí noticed the many pearl-white hairs that popped out of her mother's brown locks with pitiful eyes.
"May you please pass me the hair brush Zaraí?" Alecia asked, reaching out her pale, worn out hand to the brush.
"Sure mamá," Zaraí muffled out, handing her the brush.
Zaraí washed out her mouth and was currently drying her mouth when she told her mother, "Mamá, I don't like seeing you like this. I hate seeing you come home, tired and bruised up from work."
Alecia looked at Zaraí with tired eyes," Ya sé, ya sé, pero what can I do? We need money. Everything revolves around money. I work to provide that money, and there's nothing we can do to stop that."
"Unless money falls out the sky," Zaraí chuckled. Alecia chuckled along with her, placing a hand on Zaraí's shoulder.
"One day," Alecia started, "we won't have to worry about money. Goodnight cielo, have a good nights rest, ok?"
"Ok mamá, love you, goodnight," Zaraí said as she hugged her mother a goodnight.
Zaraí fell asleep wishing she could do much more for her family, but how could she if her age and the problem of money were in the way?
