07:29just one minute before the start off the lesson, three girls barged in through the door,
all heads turned to them as they stood there, panting as if they had run all the way to the classroom — which was actually exactly what they had done.
mark's eyes widened in surprise as he recognised one of the girls.
he 'knew' two of them, actually, but only one seemed relevant at that moment.
she still looked the same as when he had last seen her — though he should probably stop acting like that was more than a month ago, or like they even knew eachother.
yet mark couldn't help but watch in awe as she adjusted the tie of her uniform, bowed to the teacher, and then scanned the room for a place to sit.
as she did so, their eyes met for just a second, and he swore his heart skipped a beat.
more from the shock of her catching him staring than actual nerves, probably, but even now that she had taken notice of his actions he didn't look away. he couldn't.
the tension resolved as the girl's friend whispered something in her ear and then all three of them went to sit down in the unoccupied seats right behind him.
mark held his breath, hoping that she would sit behind him -- that the one with the black, curly hair. maybe that would increase his chances of striking a conversation with her.
but luck wasn't on his side, and she ended up choosing the desk farthest from where he was seated.
behind him was now the other one of the three that the boy was familiar with — ko haeun.
but familiar was a pretty big word for their situation too. he knew that she was a electricity shifter, and that she had a preference for making her opponents faint during battle (we don't talk about how he learned that though).
haeun was related to some important electricity shifter family (again, that's what a school full of rich kids is like), and really looked like it too.
there was a small group of boys in the grade below them who kissed the very ground she walked on, but that was where his knowledge about her ran out.
mark hadn't known that she was friends with the curly haired one either.
and concerning the other girl with them — he had never seen her before.
she was short and wore her maroon hair in a french bob, the grin on her face seemingly never fading.
but that she had never crossed his path in the whole 3 years they had attended NSOE already was definitely strange.
'is she new? a transferee, maybe?'
he was brought back to brutal reality of summer school by the teacher audibly clearing his throat to get the students' attention.
there really weren't many anyways. aside from dejun, hendery, ko haeun and her friends, and mark himself, only around three other kids had signed up for the classes.
one would've thought that there were more students who were expected to prepare for the entrance exams by their parents.
the lesson was incredibly boring (obviously), and mark really only got through it because hendery didn't stop making the teacher mad by throwing small balls of paper at him.
the three girls behind them seemed to find that pretty hilarious too.
even the curly haired one laughed, despite her previously stern face.
'she's got a pretty smile...'
and eventually, the bell rang, indicating the end of the first lesson.
one of the only good things about the summer classes, was the fact that you never really had more than three to four lessons a day.
of course, mark would've still preferred to have none at all, but it was too late to change that now.
he glanced to his left, to see hendery and dejun out of their seats, instead standing by the desk of one of some other boys mark didn't even know.
but do you know who still was in her seat?
mhm, you guessed it.
his mystery girl was still sitting there, staring off into space, despite her two friends leaning against the windowsill, animatedly chatting.
so without thinking too much, mark decided to take the chance and do something he normally wouldn't.
he didn't know where his sudden interest in the girl came from either, but he stood up and approached her desk.
once he was directly standing in front of it, he came to a halt.
the girl noticed him and looked up, but didn't say anything.
her bored eyes stared straight back into his own, not a hint of the smiley expression she had been wearing just minutes ago left. mark gulped, knowing very well that there was no going back now.
"uhm... hi. i'm mark."
silence.
she didn't even blink, her stare not wavering the slightest bit.
not being able to handle the awkward tension, mark spoke up again.
"what's your name...?" he was surprised at how small his voice had come out.
'oh come on, you have more confidence than this.' he told himself.
"ellie."
her answer was dry, and her voice even quieter than his own.
"nice to meet you ...ellie."
he tried to show as much enthusiasm as possible, wanting for the girl to warm up to him — but she just gave him a mere nod.
ellie swung her bag -- that had been laying on the floor by her desk — onto her lap, placing the book that lay on her table inside.
"sooo, what do you plan on doing after graduation? why are you taking this course?"
trying to make conversation, mark uncomfortably shifted his weight from one leg to the other.
"law."
"hm?"
her gaze was back on him, boring holes through him.
everything about her was screaming 'leave me the fuck alone' and yet mark didn't want to do so just yet. he couldn't just walk away after berely trying to have a proper conversation with her at least.
"law. i want to go to law school."
"ahhhh~" he slowly nodded, eyes still not leaving hers.
"now if you will excuse me..."
ellie stood up, slinging her bag over one shoulder.
giving the boy one last, judging stare, she walked off to a seat in the front, far, far away from him.
mark's eyes widened as he stared at her back that was facing him.
'oh. this definitely didn't go as planned.'
