Extended Summary
MILO CAMPBELL was never one for passion. He didn't share Dean's love for hunting or Sam's pursuit of normalcy. He merely existed, the middle child who never quite fit in. Detached and distant, some might say, but who could blame him? Born as the bastard son of Mary Winchester, Milo's arrival was an unintended consequence of her retaliation against John's infidelity. You can't fight fire with fire, and Milo was the flame that kept on burning.
Like everyone else, he never asked to be born. Yet somehow, everything seemed to fall on his shoulders just for existing. His mother's marriage to John Winchester crumbled, and Sam was supposed to be what saved them. Yet, things never happen the way you want. Sam became an unintended victim, and Mary Winchester soon caught fire, still burning from Milo's forever flame intent on destroying them all.
It wasn't truly Milo's fault, but that didn't stop John Winchester and his soldier of a son, Dean, from blaming him anyway.
Without a clear purpose growing up, Milo found one in proving his strength. And when John saw Dean falter in moments of weakness, he let Milo be useful for once and fostered a relentless, "healthy" competition between the two older brothers to keep Dean in check.
Thus, Milo's purpose was born and his role was defined.
THE SHADOW—that's what Milo became for Dean and Sam. For Dean, he was the counterbalance to his shoot-first mentality, a protector against unseen dangers. Milo shadowed Dean during hunts and training, constantly pushing him to be better, faster—perfect. For Sammy, Milo was the shadow that watched over him. Sam was the baby of the group, the one John couldn't handle while fixated on the entity that took his wife away from him. Milo was tasked with watching and steering Sam in the right direction, whether it be at school or behind closed doors. While Dean stepped up as the paternal figure in Sam's life while John left for hunting trips, Milo took the more maternal role to once again provide balance in the areas Dean lacked. That's why when Sam eventually asserted his independence and pursued his own path, Milo was held responsible.
