I get into the car and sigh, looking over at, Rome, who is driving. It is the next day after our hot night, and I was feeling a little awkward about it now. I have never done something so casual and careless like that in my life, yet it feel oddly satisfying.
"Do believe anything Mason says, you are so much better." He says.
"Thanks for coming with me to look for Lia," I say instead not wanting to talk about Mason with him.
"No problem," Ryan replies with a hint of disappointment. "I just hope we find her soon."
I nod in agreement. Lia had been acting strange the day she was leaving, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong especially when i saw Tyler was with her. She hated him and for the sake of their son she tried to be civil with him despite the problem his family caused her.
My phone buzz, and I glance at the screen to see a message from Lia's mom. My heart sinks as I read the words: "Have you seen Lia? She's not picking our calls."
I showed the message to Rome, and he curses under his breath.
"We have to find her," he says, gripping the steering wheel tightly.
I nod, feeling a lump form in my throat. Lia is my best friend, and I can't imagine my life without her. We have been through everything together, and the thought of her in danger is almost too much to bear.
As we drive, I can't help but think back to last night with Rome. It should feel like a distant memory but his touch is imprinted in my mind and the way he touches everything, it only reminds me of it.
"Let's turn down this street," I say suddenly, pointing to a side road.
Rome follows my direction, and we drive slowly, my eyes stay at Donut World as he drives. My heart pounding in my chest as we rounded a corner. She loves Donut world, it is her favorite spot with Jax and i cross my fingers and hope by some miracle i will see her seated at her favorite corner, but she is not there.
"Are you okay?" He asks, his hand on mine.
I nod against my will.
I am grateful when he doesn't persist further and i lean back.
We have a four-hour drive ahead of us to the last place my friend was seen, and the tension in the car is palpable. As the trip progresses we try to make small talk, but the conversation keeps trailing off into an uneasy silence.
I can't help but feel guilty about what Mason said as we drive through the winding roads. He always wins, and I feel like I'm betraying him now.
"What's on your mind?" Rome asks, noticing my sudden change in demeanor.
He has been observing me keenly.
I shake my head, not wanting to confess my thoughts. "Nothing, just scared." I mutter and wonder if, last night's event cross his mind too.
"Where is Jax?" He asks.
"His maternal grandparents will pick him from his father." I answer. My leg is shaking and i have no strength to even distract myself with my phone.
"I saw her once beat a guy in school, she is a tough one." Rome says and i nod agreeing. That sounds like Lia.
The hours pass in silence, the only sound coming from the radio. I watch the scenery outside the window, i have never been to this side. It is known more for its hailstorms. Any other time i would have savored the experience, however in the present nothing matters except Lia.
What if we didn't find her? What if she was hurt, or worse? My pessimist thoughts invade my head again.
Rome must have sensed my anxiety because he reaches over and placed his hand on mine. I flinched at the touch, but then relaxed a little.
"Hey," he says softly. "We'll find her. I promise."
I look over at him, and for a moment, I forget about everything else. His eyes are warm and comforting, and I feel a flutter in my stomach.
But then my mind snaps back to reality, and I pull my hand away. It is was just sex, i remind myself.
"I hope so," I say, my voice trembling.
We continue to drive on in silence, the tension between us growing with every passing mile. I can't help but wonder what my husband would say if he knew about my affair with Rome. Would he forgive me like i always do? Or would he never be able to look at me the same way again? I check my phone again and i am surprised that he hasn't texted me or even told my mother because she would be calling me by now.
As we finally arrive at our destination, I feel a wave of relief wash over me. We have made it, and now we could start searching for my friend.
But as we stepped out of the car and began walking towards the hotel she told she would be staying, I couldn't shake the feeling that things are about to get even more complicated.
