"The next drink is on me! " As soon as he said that an arrow broke straight through his glass.
"Coward! So this is where you are?!" roared a blonde lady, walking in almost immediately. "You have the money to spend on strangers yet don't have one to spend on your family?! Answer me, Mr. Man!" seeing how he stumbled through the air while fighting hard to look into her face, she reached out to him and led him out of the club.
"Wonders shall never end!" exclaimed the girl who was beside me, Claire Steve. We were both waitresses at Runner's Club. However, after a few months of working together, we discovered we had a lot of things in common, one thing led to another, and we found ourselves as best of friends. Reminiscing how we first met, our constant arguments, and reconciliations, brought a smile to my crimson face.
"Jeiel! Jeiel! Jeiel!" her voice jolted me out of my thoughts.
"I'm so sorry..." I trail off, slowly looking into her turquoise eyes which glisten with myriads of questions.
"Jeiel Vie, our manager sent for you," she yelled. I looked into her eyes to see if I could tell whether she was pulling a first one on me or not, but they were expressionless and cold. Anytime she calls me by my full name, "Jeiel Vie" I just knew there was trouble. "Today won't end great!" I gulped and went straight to answer my boss.
"Hello, sir. You sent for me?!"
"Yes, Jeiel. The C. E. O of this club is coming back next month, for a business conference. He will be staying for a couple of weeks, and I'll like everything to be done perfectly. Inform everyone, because whoever fails to carry out their job description, will automatically get fired." he ordered.
"Okay, sir. I will do just that."
"You can go now," he dismissed me. I stood outside his office, all his words re-echoing. "Who was the CEO of Runners Club?" Of truth, since I started working here, I have heard several things about the said CEO, Mark Hunt. Some said he was a playboy who has never been committed to anything aside from his job, others said he was engaged to a wealthy princess from another kingdom. However, one thing was that he was the handsome CEO of Runners Club and the heir to the D. E corporation. As established by magazines and newspapers.
It is not a new thing, some of the girls, in Texas and beyond, were dying to be identified with him. This news will surely put a smile on their faces.I hurriedly went into the bar, to pass the boss's message across to everyone. As expected, the female ones were all giggling with excitement written all over their faces. Murmurings and chattering as they all envisaged a happy stay with their dream man.
"Omg! This is a dream come true, Jeiel! Claire chimed, who would have believed, that I, Claire Smith will one day meet the heir to D. E corporation? The most eligible bachelor and a romantic one at that?! Oh dear Jeiel, please pinch me, and tell me that I am not dreaming..."
I stood there staring at her, bereft of words. What's all the fuss about?! He is just an "heir" of D.E corporation and our boss, not the president of this country or something". As if reading my thoughts, she quickly corrected me, "He is the most handsome and wealthy bachelor in California, and beyond. Why do you think girls are dying to have him all to themselves if not for his 6 '1 height, light-skinned, round face complemented by his slanting eyes and hooked nose?! He is just like a demi-god. And, to ice the cake, he is also a romantic guy with unshaken wealth."Me:"!!"
Claire: I see you've already started thinking and fantasizing about him too, right?! Don't bother, because he won't look your way. After all, you are not his type.
Me "!!"
Claire: yes! You are over-serious. Not the romantic type, so he can't notice you, and even if he does, you too are unmatched, and it won't work.
Me: Claire, stop it! I am not fantasizing about any man. I have better things to do other than that, please.
"I'm just kidding, girl" she giggled and left almost immediately.
I stood there, mesmerized by her display of excitement. "Well, maybe the guy is worth all the excitement and anticipation, but that's not my business. I have a lot of better things to think about. My certification ceremony is fast approaching and I haven't paid for it. Which might lead to my certification being withheld. And, I can't afford that.
I have no one to care for me, as my mother, Jasmine Vie, was retired or should I say, dismissed from work because of her sudden illness. Coupled with the fact that my dad is late, I have no one to lean on for financial support. I started working here, at Runners Club when I entered SS2, which was immediately after my mum took ill. The salary wasn't that big but we were managing fine, not until recently when my mum's sickness started milking money from my pocket; going to the lab, scanning, and buying her expensive drugs which were prescribed by a physician. All these took a whole lot out of my pocket, leaving me almost financially dry after each month's pay.
What would I have done? - Nothing. I'm just a twenty-three-year-old college graduate working hard to make it. To Carter for me and my sick mother. It hasn't been easy, starting from my birth - I had a rough life. I was jolted out of my thoughts by the shouts from a neighboring shop. I shrugged my shoulders and went to continue work.
Meanwhile, the other waitresses were already discussing how they plan on impressing the CEO with their looks.
Eva Kute: guys, I will start going to spas, to keep my skin soft and glowing.
Harry Dave: Don't waste your time, because the CEO won't notice you. You aren't beautiful. So do not waste your money.
Other girls: hahaha
Eva Kute: Smh… you are just jealous because we are drooling on you like the CEO. Well, it's not your fault, blame it on poverty.
Harry Dave:...
Claire: Guys let us not fight or quarrel because of this.
Eva: But he started it first?!
Bianca: Eva, ignore his bitter words, you are a fine girl.
Everyone: "!!!"
"You see, there! Everyone knows that you aren't beautiful, so stop deceiving yourself." Harry whispered.
Eva: I hate you all. She ran off.
Me: Guys, it's okay! Let's not make a fuss about this. Also, do not insult anyone. We shouldn't be fighting amongst ourselves…
"Just stop up!!!" I was cut short by their yell. I closed my eyes to avoid the straight arrows of warning shooting straight from their eyes. "What a day!"
