Chapter 3 ⎮Reap What You Sow
"I don't think you heard her, she said back the fuck up."
In the corner of my eye, I see someone walking like a man on a mission.
This causes curious glances and stares to come our way.
Kai has arrived at the scene.
Kai's one of August's best friends. He was sort of the piece maker in our group. Whenever someone got into an altercation, and by someone I mean Sterling and August because August thinks it's so hilarious to ruffle Sterling's feathers when in reality everyone within ten feet of her needs to duck and cover. I especially do not want to be around her when her lid is about to pop.
Kai's usually the referee since he didn't want any part of what dumb shit August was plotting for the day. Now thinking about it, he was probably just there for entertainment. I mean, I don't blame him.
"Yeah, you heard him, It's time for you to move along because you really won't like how this ends now." Using the heel of my stiletto, I give his foot a nice big stomp. Ouch.
You reap what you sow.
The man hobbles around on one foot for a few seconds before raising a hand.
Wow, this escalated.
Before the hand could even come down, Kai catches his arm in one hand and punches him straight across the face with the other.
Okay, now this really escalated.
This is why I never leave my humble abode and stick to Just Dance and wine nights.
Everyone in the kitchen goes silent and the people in the living room are trying to see what's going on and to be quite honest, I have no fucking clue what just happened.
A shiver runs down my spine and I get that feeling again. All I can think about are how I still feel his fingers tingling imprinting my back.
It's okay, I'm okay. Just breathe count to three and exhale.
"Vera."
"Hey, Vera, look at me. Are you okay?" Sterling says as if looks could kill.
Mabel scrambles like a chicken with their head cut off, trying to get a water
"I'm perfectly fine, see, no injuries." I give her a quick twirl.
My head is pounding, but fake it till you make it, right?
Kai and August make it back to us and starts firing questions at me.
"Are you okay-?"
"Do you need to sit down?"
"I have extra cheddar goldfishes, in the cabinet if you want some-."
"Guys! If you could just let me get a few words in, I. Am. Fine. And yes I would appreciate your extra cheddar goldfishes."
After a few minutes of Kai nearly destroying the whole pantry to get me my goldfishes, I'm snacking and thinking over everything that happened in the span of fifteen minutes- what a whirlwind.
The group is still staring at me, silently like I'm about to burst into tears any second, and I'm just so thankful I have the most caring friends ever.
"If you continue staring at me like a fish in a fishbowl, I will snap."
Everyone looks everywhere, but me. I roll my eyes sarcastically.
"Does anyone know who he is?"
"Derick or Jeric something between those lines. We found out while we were walking the piece of shit to security," Kai mutters walking towards Mabel and giving her a kiss on the top of her head.
He mumbles something making her blush.
He looks at her with this spark of life in his eyes and is so sickly adorable that I want to throw up daisies and butterflies.
Okay, it's time for me to make a break for it.
After what happened two years ago, the group kind of separated from each other. But when Kai's dating your closest friend and is practically your sworn enemy in Monopoly during game nights, it's hard to ignore him. I warned him not to mess with me or my Board Walk and Park Place.
"Kai, you better close your mouth before a fly makes its way in there, buddy." I pat him on the back and start dragging Sterling and August with me to the living room.
I turn back around and pour myself a glass of champagne.
Cheers to life.
