As I drop the knife look at his dull face losing the sparkle in his eye that always used to be there, those eyes, just thinking about him brought me back to a time when laughing boomed through the rooms and petty arguments were the only interaction of those days.
"RAFE! IT'S NOT FUNNY THAT WAS MY FAVOURITE BARBIE." I scream tears falling down my face, "OKAY WELL THAT'S NOT MY FAULT IS IT?" he screams back "WHY ARW YOU MAD! I DIDN'T JUST CUT OFF YOUR BARBIES HAIR DID I? MAYBE ILL STEAL YOUR TOY MOTORBIKE? I'LL TURN IT PINK!" I threaten, my face feels like it's burning,
at 8 years old, this seemed like the most important thing in the world thinking of the memory almost brings a smile to my face. I start to wonder how it all happened, One day all we had was pure hatred for each other, and the next day we woke up together after a drunken mistake and started secretly seeing each other behind Topper's back, but even that didn't stop the teasing, the fights, about anything, it just made them happen more.
The air crackled with humorous tension as I suddenly found myself in a fight with Rafe. The wicked gleam in his eyes was mirrored by the silly smile that flashed over my lips as our eyes locked. The exchange of a lighthearted quip was the beginning of it all, but soon our friendly conversation turned into a full-fledged verbal brawl.
Each of us fired words like bullets in an effort to outwit the other with swift replies and clever resorts. There was a subconscious understanding that this was all in good humor even as our voices got harsher.
"Careful, Rafe," I teased, playfully crossing my arms. "Your insults are starting to sound a lot like compliments." His voice was stained with humorous spite as he laughed. "You wish you were half as smart as me" I gave a dramatic eye-roll. "Please, Rafe, A bowl of mashed potatoes has more humor in it" A joking gasp escaped his mouth. "It hurts me, Maddie. My words are like hits that are aimed right at your ego." I couldn't help but giggle in amusement. I scoff "Hits? It feels more like a little breeze gliding against my skin."
I feel disconnected from the world, glancing at him again as I find myself sitting on the stairs that I had just fallen down not only a few minutes ago. Was I really still in love with him?...
