It was a stormy night. The trees bustling and swaying viciously as the wind forced their branches out of its way. The rain pounded on the roof of my house as I texted my friends on the couch. My 5 year old sister whined as she sat in boredom next to me.
I looked at her in annoyance. "Stop whining. It's annoying." I looked back at my phone as it went off. I scrolled through 3 new messages that I had just gotten. They all basically said the same thing. My friends were telling me to turn on the news. So I did. I had nothing better to do.
I watched as horror filled my eyes and my sister squeezed my arm in fear. The news anchor wasn't explaining what was happening. He only told us that an infection had spread from a lab that was trying to cure cancer. They either made it worse, or failed horribly. I stood up quickly and looked outside at the wet streets then back at my sister.
She looked back and asked, "when is mommy coming home?" I could tell she was scared from the way I was acting. She knew something was up.
I sat down again and checked my phone for the time. 12:57 A.M. Mom wouldn't be back anytime soon. It's too late. She wasn't working late. She should've been home by 11 P.M. Something must've happened. I looked into my sister's eyes. "I don't think she's coming back. Something must've come up." I replied calmly, trying not to alarm her of something major being wrong.
My phone went off again. I looked at it and saw more messages from my friends. They were coming to pick us up to get out of the city. I looked at my sister as I stood up. "Start packing a bag, Cassie. We're leaving soon. Pack 1 important memory and survival items."
She stared in fear then nodded and went to her room. I went to my room and looked for my black messenger bag. Once I found it, I grabbed a picture of my sister, mom, and me. Then I grabbed my bow and arrows, my knife, a few flashlights, walky-talkies and batteries. After I packed those into my bag, I went to Cassie's room and put water's and cans in her bag. She was unhappy when I pulled things out of her bag. They weren't very important, so I didn't want her whining about having to carry extra weight.
I heard a car honk out front. I grabbed Cassie and her bag as I hurried to the front door. I grabbed my gray sweatshirt and her coat. I helped Cassie into her coat then threw mine on and dragged her outside.
I looked at the truck that was pulled into the driveway.
A boy with black hair motioned for us to get in. I walked up to the side door and opened it. Cassie got in and I followed her in. I looked at the tall and skinny 16 year old in the driver's seat as he backed out of the driveway and drove off. He glanced back at me then looked straight again and asked, "are you guys alright?"
I looked at Cassie then at the other passengers. "Cassie and I are fine." I answered looking back at him. "Nothing got-" my sentence was cut off by another boy in the passenger seat. He yelled watch out as a car came racing around a corner and rammed into us.
The truck flipped and I was unconscious for a minute or two. As I opened my eyes, all I heard was screams, rain, and wind. I looked around and saw the driver carrying me as he ran from the flaming truck. His shoulder was bleeding with skin hanging off.
I looked at his face as rain water fell off it. His eyes were narrow and he yelled at the other passengers from the truck. I cringed at his yelling and he realized I was awake. He looked at me and kissed my forehead. "Sleep, baby. We'll be safe in no time." I ignore him and look around again. "Where's Cassie?" I asked not seeing her anywhere.
He kept running and looked forward. "Tom is carrying her." I look for the blonde that has my sister. I finally see him running with my brunette sister in his arms.
"Jake, where are we going?" I asked the black haired boy that's carrying me.
"Somewhere safe." He responded.
