It's Vincent who insists that Jamie should attend Jeff Sadecki's party that night.
Mama's at book club for the night, having been picked up by one of her friends to meet and discuss the latest romance paperback they've picked out for the week, which means that Vince has the van for the night.
It also means that he's in the mood to cause trouble, a fact Jamie is more than aware of even as she fixes her hair in the little mirror hanging on his bedroom door.
Kurt Cobain's voice and the smell of pot smoke fills the room, both flooding out through Vincent's open window as he tries to keep the smell from spilling out into the rest of the house. Jamie's not sure which will get the police called first, the stink, or the volume.
"I won't even hang around," he says. "I'll drop you off, find somewhere to be for the night, and get you home before Mama even knows you were gone."
"I don't have clothes for a party," Jamie replies, defaulting to the first excuse that pops into her mind.
Vincent snorts at that, taking a drag off of the joint dangling in his fingers. "They're your friends," he points out. "They know how you dress. Jame, they're the ones who invited you. Just go out, have fun."
"You're a bad influence."
"You sound like Mama. Listen, you can do what you want to do, I'm just telling you... have fun while you can."
Jamie can't help the laugh that escapes her at that. "So, you're telling me to act like you?"
"Don't act like it's so ridiculous. You and I both know you're not exactly squeaky clean," Vince says. "And besides, Nat's going to be there."
She feels her shoulders slump as she turns to look at him, annoyance flooding her face. "I've told you not to talk about her."
"Oh, come on," he answers. "It's not my fault you're half in lo- -"
"Vincent!" she states, voice going firm.
He stops himself, raising his hands in mock surrender. "Sorry," he says, a touch of genuine concern in his voice. "You know it's all right, right? That you..."
The rest of the statement hangs unsaid in the air. Jamie sighs, squeezing the bridge of her nose as she feels the all-too-familiar start of a migraine coming on. "Not everyone can be as open as you, Vincent," she says. "If- - if I go to the party, will you shut up about me and Natalie?"
