Walking through the mess, I watch where I step. I don't have any shoes on. The front door is busted down and outside there's a bunch of people walking around.
"You're almost there. We need to get you to that ambulance over there."
She points across the street. I walk out the door. The sun is just starting to rise and I'm still able to see the moon. I don't know the last time I saw the moon. I follow her across the lawn and then to the paved road.
2 people with bags see me and start running towards me. I freeze.
"Stop. Stay back. She's a flight risk."
They stop running but everyone stops and stares.
"Can we check her over? She obviously needs medical attention."
"I don't think she'll let you look at her."
"Chris. How bad are her injuries?"
"I don't know."
I take a step back. The man that tried to get me out the first time runs towards us.
"Hondo, stop."
He freezes.
"She's a flight risk. We should get as many cops out of here as we can."
"What's scaring her?"
"I don't know. She hasn't talked, she won't let me touch her, she hasn't made any eye contact, and every time someone gets close she looks like she's going to take off."
"I'll see what I can do."
He walks away and she turns her attention back to me.
"Do you want to sit on the curb or in the back of the ambulance?"
I stare at my feet.
"Ok... follow me."
She walks across the street and towards the back of the ambulance. I look at the guys in front of the ambulance and they stare at me. I put my head down and walk over to her.
"Climb up here and sit."
She pats the back of the ambulance. I sit down and she stands in front of me with a bag.
"What's your name?"
I look at her shoes.
"I need you to listen. There's blood on your shirt so I'm going to need you to lift it up. I need to make sure you're not hurt. Can you do that for me?"
I pull my knees up to my chest and wrap my arms around them.
"Look, I know you don't want to do this, but your choices aren't good either way. You can either show me or you have to go to the hospital and then show them."
"With all that blood, we're taking her whether she wants to go or not."
"Luca, that is not helping." She glares at him and then turns to me. "I need you to stay here. I'm going to go talk to my team and see what your choices are. Ok?"
She walks away and heads towards the guy.
"Luca, I'm going to talk to Hondo. You watch her."
He wanders towards me. I brace myself to run.
"Wait." He holds his hands out in surrender. "I promise I'm not going to hurt you. I'll take a few steps back and keep my distance, but on one condition, you have to stay there. Ok? Do we have a deal?"
I stare at his shoes. He wears the same pair as the other two. He also has a gun strapped to his thigh, the same as the other two. The guy that tried to get me out first and Chris walk back over.
"She doesn't like you or Luca, so you two could try, but I'm not messing up my relationship with her because of this."
"Chris, what do you mean she doesn't like me?"
"Luca, come here."
Chris walks over to me, and she keeps about 3 ft of distance between us.
"Hey."
She looks down at my feet.
"You got glass in your feet. Can I get it out?"
She takes a step closer to me, and I start to stand up.
"Ok. It's ok. I won't come over there."
She takes a step back, and I sit back down.
"I know you're scared, but I need you to trust me, alright?"
I hear footsteps behind me and turn around.
"Now Luca."
Electricity flows through my body, and my muscles lock up. I grunt at the sudden pain. It feels like forever before it stops.
Once it stops a bunch of hands grab me. I try to pull my arms free, but someone pinned them to my sides. I try to kick and my ankles are held down. I try to sit up and my shoulders are held down. One second, I'm on the ground of the ambulance and the next I'm being held up on my way to a stretcher.
"Watch the injuries on her stomach."
I try to get out of their grip but nothing is working. I start hyperventilating.
"We're almost done. Just strap her down."
"Got the prongs out."
Whoever had my wrist, their grip slips and I throw my hand up, punching someone. The hands on my shoulders loosen. I try to sit up but someone else is grabbing my shoulders.
"I need you to breathe."
I look up and see Chris.
"I know you're not happy right now, but I need you to breathe. Copy me. In."
She breathes in.
"Out."
She breathes out.
I just lay there hyperventilating and trying to get out of their grip.
"I need you to copy me. Make this easier for yourself. Please. Just breathe in, copy me."
"She's strapped down."
"Everyone back off."
"Chris, Tan, I want both of you in the back to provide support to the EMTs and help her stay calm. Everyone else we'll meet them at the hospital. Go."
The stretcher I'm on gets loaded into the back of the ambulance.
"Hey, look at me. I know you're scared, but I need you to try to calm down and breathe. Copy me."
"Breathe in."
She takes a deep breath in. My breath is shaky and uneven, but I breathe in.
She breathes out, and I copy her.
I look over and there's a guy next to me. I make eye contact with him by accident. I start hyperventilating again.
"Deep breaths, he's not going to hurt you. I promise. His name is Tan. He's my friend. Now I need you to take a few more deep breaths for me, ok? Can you do that?"
I breathe in, then breathe out. I copy Chris as she does it with me.
"Do you want me to see how bad her injuries are?"
"No, she'll freak out more. We should wait to get to the hospital. How far out are we?"
"We'll be there in 3-5 minutes depending on traffic."
