"Hey! Can it, will ya?" Lena hollers as she slams on the ceiling with her umbrella, not-so-politely asking her upstairs neighbors to stop being so loud.
"Lena for the last time I don't want any more holes in the ceiling!" Her mothers shouts from the living room, "this place is beat up enough already..."
"Sorry mom! I love you!" Lena yells in response. Except she wasn't sorry. She hated her neighbors.
"It's okay baby." Lena's mom says as she walks into the kitchen, "Okay. Inventory check-"
"Mom, I don't have time for this, I'm gonna be late. I have my pepper spray, I have my taser. I will be fine. I don't know why you're so worried about me anyways," Lena muttered as she walked towards the door.
"Hey, pretty girls like you get hurt in places like this. You're all I've got, Lena. I gotta look out for you."
"Yeah yeah I know,"
Lena's mom leaned in and hugged her tight and kissed her forehead lightly.
"You be safe out there okay?"
"Yes mom, like I ever get into any trouble anyways..."
Lena walked out the front door, grabbing her lunch on the way.

God, her mom could be a pain sometimes. It's not like anyone could actually hurt Lena anyways. She was different, she knew it. No one could hurt her if they tried. She'd always thought this about herself, she just didn't know how to tell her mom without coming off as sounding completely insane.

Guess that's just the way it's gotta be, Lena thought, and she began her journey to school.
