•Maria's POV•

"Father, must you be so cruel to the pirates?" I asked him. My father turned to me with an evil glare. "Do you not remember what they have done to our towns? Turned it to rubble, abused it, devastated the people living there! They deserve the beheading they'll be receiving in a few days. Hopefully a few of them will die of starvation." He smiled.

I hung my head and left my fathers quarters. But, little did he know of his missing keys.

Aren't I an angel?

This wouldn't be the first time I've stolen the keys to see the pirates downstairs. But I only want to see one.

My Shadow.

He's told me about the sea. What the pirate life is like. My father doesn't allow me to leave, so Shadow is the only thing that's an adventure to me.

He says he has a girl named, Rouge. But I feel as though...he loves me too. Should I be jealous? I don't even know her, yet I feel like she'll end up with his heart. No matter how much Shadow and I love each other...something is going to happen...and she'll have his heart one day.

I ran down to the dungeon and to his cell. Other pirates were trying to grab me and pull me next to them through the bars.

"Hey! Let her go!" I heard Shadow hiss at them. They all ignored him and continued to reach for my dress. "It's okay, Shadow. They can't get me. Are you well? What happened?" I asked him worriedly.

"I'm fine, Maria. Don't worry over me, my crew will show up soon for me. Rouge wouldn't let them leave without me..." He whispered that last part. I gulped and forced a smile. "So...what happened?" I asked him again.

"We...were getting treasure and they showed up." Shadow snarled at the cells down the hall. It all went silent when I heard a female speak.

"You think this was our fault? If this wasn't for your Captain Sonic; none of us would be here!"

"Shut up you pink ignorant-"

"Once I get out of here I'm cutting off your head!"

A chorus of yells of agreement came from the hallway. "Oh shush up!" I scolded and they all laughed.

"Those pirates are rude." I declared. He nodded and shook his head. "Maria...why do you come down here? You can only get into trouble." I giggled at him. "I come because you're alone, and no one deserves to be alone." I started to blush.

"Well...thank you, Maria-"

"If you keep blabbering to her, what do you think Rouge will think? We'll have to go tell her, won't we boys and girls?" The pirates down the hall laughed. I shook my head. "Don't worry about them, Shadow." I said to him.

"No...their right. You should leave Maria...before you get caught." He said and flipped over to his side; his back now facing me. "Ok...goodbye... Shadow..." And I went upstairs to my room.

(Next Day)

I was walking to school with my two bestfriends, Charmy and Saffron.

"OooooOOOooo" Charmy said loudly. "If your dad finds out you went to see a pirate...you're gonna die!" He yelled. "Charmy, be quiet!" I ordered. "Saffron, quiet your boyfriend." I said to her. She nodded and grabbed Charmys antennae. "Hey! That hurts!" He screamed.

We walked into our school and we all took a seat.

"Class, we'll be having a pirate warning sometime today." Our teacher said warmly. I got out my pencils and notebooks. Class was going to be hard today. I couldn't get Shadow out of my head.

It had been nice just talking to him. Why did he already have to be taken? Can't I have him? She can have him in the next life, but can't I have him now?

"Maria!" My teacher spat.

"Oh, sorry. Yes ma'am?" I said and looked up at her. "Read page 165-168, please." She instructed me. I nodded and stood up.

Charmy and Saffron stared at me as I read. My pages were all about the 'terrible' pirates. How they kill people and steal...Shadow's not like that.

He...he's just following orders. He wouldn't do it if he had his own choice, but his Captain must be rude and ruthless. A typical pirate, follows the pirate rules, all of them. And would kill his crew if they disobey him.

I can only wonder how it must be living with roughens.

After school

Charmy, Saffron, and I went back to my house. My father was too busy to notice us come in. Dinner would be soon and then night would fall and we'd all go to sleep. Like a normal day.

As dinner began a bell rang out through our house.

"Lord Eggman! Lord Eggman! We have trouble! A fire has started in the guest chambers!" One of the soldiers yelled. "And...The Gold Ring is coming on shore..." The other one whispered.

I gasped.

"Take my daughter somewhere safe. Where's her friends?" My father asked the guards as they pulled me away. "They started the fire while flying in the room...I'm sorry...they died..."

That's the last thing I heard as I got dragged away.

"Don't worry, Maria. We won't let those pirates get you!" The soldier yelled. I shook my head and yanked my arm away from them. "Madame Maria?"

I ran down to the basement where Shadow was. All of the prisoners were screaming their heads off. "Shadow!" I yelled. The fire was already spreading down here. The smoke was suffocating me. "Maria? Maria?! What are you doing here?" Shadow gasped and grabbed my wrist. "I had to set you and the others free." I told him.

He stared at me in shock. "Maria...I-"

"Shadow!" I heard a females voice ring out.

"Rouge?" Shadow said and looked away from me to where her voice had come. "Rouge! Over here!" He yelled. I stared at this white bat as it landed next to us. "You're Eggmans daughter...what are you doing with Shadow?!" She exclaimed. "I was-"

"Rouge! You have to get me out! We all need to run!" He yelled at her. She nodded and got the bars loosened and he got out. "Great! Now we have to go! Come on Maria!" He said as he grabbed Rouge's hand.

I sat still.

"Maria?" He said as they realized I wasn't following. "I have to get the others out! You two go!" I screamed at them. They nodded and they ran off.

"Take care of him..." I whispered.

"Help!! Help us!!" I ran down the hall to where the other pirates were. "Don't worry, I'll get you all out!" I said and I pulled on the door. "Everyone push while I pull!" I ordered. They all did as I said.

The door got unhinged and they all trampled over me as they ran out.

"Help!" I heard one pirate yell. I looked into the cell to see a pink hedgehog. I tried to grab her hand, but a pillar fell between us. "Ahh!!!" I screamed. It was probably too late for her. I stood up and ran outside where soldiers were with my father.
