one.

Jenny sighs contently under the peaceful light of the afternoon sun. Some starlings chirp overhead, swirling in their great swarms through the sky. Jenny smiles up at them, using one of her hands to shield her eyes from the bright sunlight.

Matilda runs around her to get out some of her energy, prattling off facts about mice she'd read in that day's book.

"Careful, darling," Jenny says as Matilda starts climbing the old oak tree she's resting in the shade beneath.

"I will be!" Matilda says, in one of those exasperated child tones. Jenny chuckles and settles back in, picking up the novel she'd brought with her to read. Matilda continues her facts as she skillfully maneuvers herself between the branches and leans out like Tarzan over the horizon.

Jenny startles as she suddenly hears a crack and Matilda yelps, followed by a dull thud. "Matilda!"

Matilda rubs her head and looks up at her from the ground. The broken branch is still wrapped in her other fist. Jenny crouches down next to her and frantically starts looking her over.

"Are you alright, darling?"

"I think so," Matilda groans. "Ouch."

Jenny notices her knees and elbows are scraped and bleeding a bit. She sighs in relief. With the way she fell, Matilda could've easily broken something or sprained something else.

"You're bleeding. Let's go get you patched up," Jenny says. Matilda stands and hobbles after her back towards the house on her sore legs.

Jenny leads her to the kitchen and hoists her up onto the counter next to the sink. Matilda sits and watches her as Jenny goes to fetch the first aid kit from the hall closet and comes back. Jenny wets a cloth and gently presses it against the first knee. Matilda hisses and winces.

"Sorry, love. Almost done," she says. Matilda looks at her through squinted eyes. Jenny cleans the blood off so she can get a better look at her scrapes. They aren't terribly big given the fall she had, but they're clearly smarting. Jenny soaks a cloth pad in some wound-cleaning solution. "This'll sting a bit. Ready?"

Matilda gently reaches for her free hand and nods. Jenny gives her a squeeze and gently presses the pad against her knee to sanitize it.

"Stops any germs getting in there. All done," Jenny says. Matilda's wounds get covered in bandages with fun patterns and she's popped back on the ground. "Let's stay on the ground for a little while, hm?"

"Definitely," Matilda agrees with a giggle. "Thanks, mu- uh. Miss Honey."

Jenny quirks her head at Matilda's stumble, but smiles. "You're very welcome, love."
