He couldn't find her. Callisto clucked his tongue reluctantly, his strides getting quicker. He wondered if she had left already. It didn't seem unlikely of her, considering how she had again refused to dance with him muttering something about their relationship being "not official yet".
To fuck with that.
Another fear gnawed at the back of his mind. Fear that she might have left. Gone back to that damned world. What would he do then?
He couldn't help being anxious all the time, no matter how many times she had rebuked him for this. He rubbed the dark circles under his eyes, as he once again jerked himself awake to look for her.
The dazzling ballroom was lit owing to his first birthday celebration as Emperor. He swished his head left and right, and spotted the damn Eckart Duchy laughing brightly, but without the presence of his beloved.
Callisto made eye contact with the Duke, and saw him look at him sharply, just as he sucked away to one of dark corners of the banquet hall to avoid his future father-in-law.
A dainty hand creeped out of the dark, placed on his bicep. Callisto pulled his sword, ready to frighten this nth seductress assassin, when emerald eyes took his breath away. Penelope gazed sheepishly at him, smiling giddily.
Something was wrong.
His Princess never, ever allowed this much happy expression on her face, except maybe when discovering archaeological artefacts. She pulled him towards her with sudden strength, quickly pulling his cheeks to her lips.
"What the fuck princess, are you drunk?!" Callisto managed after she had smothered him with kisses.
"Shush", Penelope reprimanded quietly, putting her finger on his lips. Then she whispered treacherously in his ear, "Yes."
"Wha-"
She clamped her hand on his mouth, still smiling in that adorable way. "You talk too much, Your Highness. Let's go somewhere quieter."
She led him quietly through the banquet doors, careful to not let her family see them, and hopped happily down the corridors. Callisto followed, bewildered. Maybe he didn't mind getting her drunk that much.
Once out in the open Palace Gardens, Callisto found the will to speak. Holding her hands tightly in his, he rebuked, "What the fuck did you drink to make you this happy?"
"Oh, just some wine, to loosen my nerves, you know." Penelope stopped talking, distracted majorly by the glint in his eyes. Her eyes raked over his face, as if not in her control. Callisto could no longer tell if the blush was from her drunkenness.
"You are very handsome, Your Majesty."
Callisto blushed. "You are certainly straightforward when you're drunk, huh?"
She simply shrugged.
"I have always thought that. Remember I told you I love your hair? They're like golden-"
"-Powder floating like specks of gold, yeah."
Penelope smiled brighter. " Well, I love you, even though I don't say it much."
This was getting too much for him. He was supposed to be the one professing his love for her for the rest of their lives. Suddenly, she frowned. Her fingers feathered his cheeks.
