“Okay class, so naisip ko na dito nalang sa advisory ko, kukuha ng magiging representative para sa debate next week,” I heard Ma’am Cipriano’s announcement to the class. I was listening while ma’am was talking in front. I just finished revising the manuscript that LA asked for.
“I was thinking last day if who will be our next representative?” Ma’am asked and placed her forefinger in her lips, like she was thinking for something.
My classmates were also quiet while listening to her. Nagdadalawang isip pa ako kung magtataas ba ako ng kamay o hindi, pero kalauna’y nag angat ako ng kamay.
Ma’am Cipriano’s attention turned to me. I lowered my hand shyly and bit my lip. I noticed that many eyes immediately landed on me. Merong matang mapanghusga, mapang asar at meron din naka taas lang kilay at parang walang pakialam kung ano na ang mga nangyayari.
“Yes, Ms. Shin?” ma’am asked me and smiled.
I cleared my throat and stood up.
“I-i want... to volunteer myself as a debater ma’am,” I said while stammering.
I immediately heard complaints from my classmates. I swallowed for a moment and looked at ma’am, waiting for what she would say.
“Sur—”
Ma’am was interrupted when one of my classmates, Aleah Siara suddenly stood up.
“Ma’am!”
Ma’am shifted her gaze to her. “Yes Ms. Santos, what is it?” Ma’am asked and folded the paper she was holding.
“Ma’am, it would be better if Jean-Caspian would be our representative for the debate,” she suggested.
“Hmm...” Ma’am thought for a moment. “It’s up to Mr. Lopez if it is okay with him?” Ma'am added and looked at Jean-Caspian who is not even paying attention.
I bowed down. Tumingin ako sa gawi ni Jean-Caspian at nakita ko itong naka tingin sa labas. Hindi ko alam kung ano ang iniisip niya, mas maganda ngang siya nalang ang magiging representative namin. He’s good. I’m not doubting my ability but we all know that Jean-Caspian intelligence is beyond mine.
“But Ms. Shin, already volunteered,” Ma’am added and she was like she’s not okay with the suggestion of Siara.
“But Ma’am... Jean-Caspian is better, we will definitely win, if you choose him,” Siara insisted and looked in my direction. I also saw how she rolled her eyes at me. But I don’t even care.
“Ms. Sant—”
“Athena is too shy,” giit pa nito.
“You know what bruha ka— I mean Siara, maybe you should join the debate instead of Jean-Caspian and Athena it seems you are not agreed to Athena to be our representative,” Kc stood up and lifted her chin up. She even placed her hands on her waist and faced Siara.
“I’m not talking to you,” Siara murmured and raised her eyebrows to Kc.
“Are you Jean-Caspian’s spokesperson at kuda ka ng kuda diyan?” Kc asked. Mahahalata mo talagang napipikon na ito sa kaklase namin.
“I’m just suggesting you b*tch,” Siara replied bitterly.
“Suggesting mo mukha mo. As you can see? Lady already volunteered herself and then e-epal ka. Not even Jean-Caspian himself volunteered. Pabida ka girl?” Kc blurted out and rolled her eyes.
“That’s enough!” ma’am weaned but the two ignored it and continued to look at each other. I really need to stop them before it’s too late.
“It’s true, Jean-Caspian is smarter than your Lady Athena, weak and loser...” Siara answered teasingly. Medyo nasaktan ako sa sinabi nito pero agad ko rin namang binalewala.
