The Mark

The next day I changed into my workout clothes and I was doing some stretches when I heard the door of the gym creak open. I turned around to see him scrutinising the place.

"Cool, isn't it?" I asked him in an excited voice.

"It's adequate given the circumstances," he said in an offhand manner which really pissed me off. I scowled at him. I wondered if this guy would really appreciate anything in life.

"Look this is the best place there is right now in this town and this gym used to be a ballet studio but for now it's closed. I used to sneak in here when I wanted a little me-time you know," I told him, pulling my hairs into a ponytail.

"We won't be needing this today. Meet me in the grounds outside in ten minutes," he said pointing to his watch and shutting the door without bothering for an explanation.

If I was confused, I did not show it on my face. I grabbed my jacket and scurried out after him.

"We will be doing rounds today," he declared casually and leaned against the bark of a tree.

"Rounds? Are you freaking mad dude? It's free.. freezing out here." My teeth were chattering badly in the cold and I pulled the jacket closer, huddling to myself whereas he seemed unconcerned.

"I thought you were training me to be a slayer and not for olympics. What's with all the running on ice?" I snapped back, throwing daggers at him.

"What do you know about vampires?" he asked me pretending to not having heard my previous remark. So now he wanted to test my GK on vampires? Great!

"Vampires are not born but they are sired by turning humans. Their venom is fatal but if you could survive the transformation then you become like them. They are immortal, lethal, fast as a lightning bolt with unparalleled strength and senses. They survive by feeding off on human blood. They can be killed either by setting them on fire, beheading them or staking them to the heart by a silver stake," I recited like a school kid but he didn't respond but picked up a twig fallen at the base of the tree and started twiddling it in between his fingers. I couldn't help but gaze at him. How could he manage to look like a demigod even when he was annoying the crap outta me?

"Ok. That's something even a mundane person can tell," he said with a smirk and I wished I could wipe that off his face. The fact that my senses went berserk in his proximity wasn't helping me much either.

"You know about vampires in theory. Now let's see what you know about the real world. What would you do when you face a vampire?" he asked me throwing the twig away and crossing his arms over his chest.

"You stake them, of course," I said, rolling my eyes as the answer was so very obvious.

"Say you didn't have one on you at that moment. What will you do?"

Huh? Well I had never considered this possibility.

"Hmmm... I shall chop his head off?" I asked him tentatively.

He said nothing for a while and his face did not betray him. It was as impassive as ever.

"With what? You don't have an axe, a sword, or any weapon of any sort," he said, studying my face. I know I must look like an idiot to him right now. But hey which slayer will not carry a weapon with him?

"I shall maybe... I donno... set him on fire?" I said, trying hard to think, racking my brains.

"Assuming you are carrying a can of oil or kerosene you can douse him with," he said in a bored voice. "Let's say you don't even have a lighter or a matchbox with you. Then?"
