"Sandy!" Sandy's mother calls. "What is it, Mom?" Sandy asks. "It's Frances! She's been howling since 5:45 am. I think the puppies are coming!" Sandy's mother says. "Call Dr. Gilbert. Let her know that the puppies are coming!" Sandy rushes to the phone and calls the vet after her mother told her that. "Dr. Gilbert is on her way!" Sandy told her mother. "What's going on here?" Sandy's father came in the whelping room. "It's Frances, Dad. Mom thinks the puppies are coming." Frances whined in pain. "Oh! Here comes puppy one!" Sandy rushes to Frances' side. She calmly pets her pet's head as Frances gives birth to the first puppy. Dr. Gilbert arrived. "All right, where's Mommy?" Dr. Gilbert asked Sandy's parents. "Frances and Sandy are down the hall on the first door on the right." Sandy's father answered. "Dr. Gilbert, thank you for help! I think that Frances is in labor," Sandy says. "Well, she sure is! You see that sack? That's a puppy," Dr. Gilbert said. "I need you to pet her calmly and encourage her and her pups will come." Sandy did as the vet said and sure enough the second puppy came. "Shh. Don't worry, Frances. She's the same vet who checked on you when I didn't know you were going to have puppies." Sandy calmly tells her dog. Soon, Puppy number three came. "I should have told you this, Sandy but Frances is having twelve puppies." Dr. Gilbert said as Puppy number four arrived. "Tw-twelve?!" Sandy was surprised as Puppy number five came in the world. Frances yelped as Puppy number six came. That's a lot of puppies! Sandy thinks as Puppy number seven came. "There's three girls and five boys!" Dr. Gilbert says as Puppy number eight came. "Phew! That's a lot of babies!" Dr. Gilbert said as Puppy number nine arrived. "Four girls and six boys!" As Puppy number ten came. "Keep up the good work, Frances!" Sandy says as Puppy number eleven arrived. "Phew! That's the last puppy. Six girls and six boys!" Dr. Gilbert says after the last puppy came in the world. "I knew you could do it, Frances!" Sandy gives Frances a great kiss on the head. *Squeak squeak squeak* the puppies were squeaking for Mommy. "For this emergency, I am not going to charge." Dr. Gilbert said to Sandy's parents. "Frances has given birth to twelve puppies." "What?!" Sandy's father was surprised as well as Sandy's mother.
