ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀ ᴏɴᴇ

"My dad is a firefighter!" 

"Oh yeah? My dad is a doctor. He helps people get better." 

"What about you, Chloe? What does your dad do?" A few classmates had approached and asked.

I sighed, as I colored in my favorite coloring book.

"I don't know."

"What do you mean you don't know?" Another classmate asked. 

"I just don't know." 

"You don't know what your dad does?" 

I thought. I had to make up a lie. Truth is, I never met my dad. My momma had always told me that he is a bright star in the sky, but I don't believe her. He has to be here, somewhere. And It's my goal to find him. 

"Okay, My dad is an astronaut." I said. 

"Really?"

"No way!" 

"That's so cool!" 

"Yeah, he's on his way to the moon." I said, as I smiled. 

"I wish my dad had a cool job." 

"Me too."

"Her dad isn't an astronaut! She doesn't have a dad!" One of the boys in my class yelled. 

It was Luke.  

I never really liked Luke. He was always so mean to me. 

"Nu-uh! He is too!" I argued back. 

"Is not, stupid!" Luke spit back at me. 

I stood up, and walked towards Luke. 

I shoved him, as hard as I could. 

He tripped, and fell, but soon enough, he was back on his feet, shoving me the exact same way. 

"Hey! Luke!" Ms. Taylor shouted. 

She rushed over to help me up. 

"She started it!"

"Chloe?" 

"Sorry, Ms. Taylor." 

...

"Oh- Chloe Elizabeth Pane, just you wait till we get home." My mother angrily said, grasping my wrist, and walking outside my school. 

"Sorry, Momma." I apologized. 

"Sorry? Sorry? Chloe, I don't enjoy having to come pick up my second grader because she got into a fight at school!" Momma shouted. 

"But they were talking about dad." 

My momma then stopped. She turned around, keeling down facing me. She placed her hands on my shoulders. 

"I'm sorry, Chloe. Maybe things would be easier for you if your dad was still here, but he's not, and I want to apologize that he wasn't here too meet you." 

I shrugged. 

There was nothing I could do.
