❝Chapter Ten: Kisses and Headaches❞
➺The first thing Griffin noticed when he got up the next morning was the headache.
The dull pain grew as he dropped Liam off at school, making him lose the little confidence he had left in his driving ability. Griffin could only stare at Beacon Hills high school from his car, something keeping him planted firmly in the parking lot.
He felt like he was in a trance, only moving to pop an advil and take a swig of his Dr. Pepper. The car shook with the slam of the door, startling him out of his disassociation. "Hey, blondie, want a blondie?"
Griffin didn't bother hiding the goofy grin the cracked his face at the sight of her, possibly the only person who wouldn't worsen his headache. Maria held a small container, the undeniable scent of her infamous lemon bars filing his rover. "I honestly don't know how I'd get by without you," Griffin sighed, grabbing a sweet and popping it in his mouth eagerly.
"Good thing you'll never have to find out," she laughed as he devoured her hard work, a lazy smile forming as she watched him.
"Have I mentioned how much I like lemons, 'cause I really like lemons," Griffin sighed contentedly, looking over to Maria.
This time when he met her gaze, something in him stilled. "Yeah, you've definitely told me at least ten times in the past month," Maria didn't bother hiding how her eyes raked over every detail of his face. "Watcha looking at, Grif?"
He hummed and shrugged lamely, trying not to squirm under her judgment. Something in her eyes changed, familiar but daunting all the same. She hesitantly moved across the center console, reaching out a manicured hand to hold his jaw.
He swallowed, feeling his cheeks grow pink as his blue eyes flickered between her hazel ones, and the plump lips under them. Did he want to kiss her?
He wasn't given any more time to think, her lips suddenly firmly planted atop his own. He startled back, the base of his head connecting with the window. A sudden wave of guilt washed over him; he couldn't tell whether it was because of the look on Maria's face, or something else entirely.
"What's wrong," Maria looked at him worriedly, detaching herself from him and shuffling to press her back against the door opposite to him.
"I just," Griffin cleared his throat, trying not to make eye contact with her. "I think I should go. Class is about to start."
That was probably the first and last time he'd ever say that.
