I woke up at 7:30 a.m this morning and started to get ready for school when I realized there was no school today. No school today as in today which means that it's summer break. I flopped back into my bed with a rejoicing sigh. I pulled the covers over my head and peacefully drifted back to sleep. But then, I was woken up again by my mom 30 minutes later.
"Wake up Rowena! You can't be late!" I heard my mom say as she pulled the covers off from over my head.
"Mom," I said groggily, "it's summer break! There's no more school!" I sat up and rubbed my eyes.
"I mean, you can't be late for your new job!" She said urgently as she shoved me off my bed. I fell to the floor, suddenly more awake.
"Wait, what do you mean by 'new job'"? I asked, suddenly out of my groggy daze.
"Oh, did I forget to tell you that you have a summer job at the library?" My mom wondered as she quickly made my bed.
"Uh, I think I would've remembered if you told me I had a SUMMER job! Mom, why do I have to this?" I inquired as I got up. I could see my mom's long, dirty blond hair bounce as she put the pillows into place.
"Your father," she started as she put a pillow down, " and I decided that you need to start living your life." She put another pillow down and took a short breath. "You're a teenager, and you need to start living your summer in the world. Explore, make relationships, discover new things! You can't just spend your entire life cooped in this tiny room!" Silence followed.
"And," I began," you want me to start exploring the world by spending my entire summer in the library?" I asked.
Mom froze.
"Yes, I do. It helps you to meet new people."
"Ugh!" I flopped back down on the floor. Mom finished making my bed.
"Now hurry up and get ready. You have to be at the library at 9, and you don't want to be late on your first day," she declared and walked out of my room.
Reluctantly, I started to shower and get ready for what a horrible summer this is going to be.
