Codex waited patiently for the police to pull into the station. The police men rudely jerked him out of the car, and brought him into the station. Fox had not arrived yet. They stripped Codex of all of his belongings, he allowed them to throw him into a cell silently.
Fox was shoved into the cell next to Codex a few moments later. She scoffed, pushing her hair out of her face. "Hey Codex." "Hey Fox." Codex said calmly. It was easy to tell by the tone of his voice that his mind was elsewhere.
Fox leaned over, pressing herself close against the bars. Her bangs fell into her face, covering her eyes. She glanced shyly at the guard nearby. "Hold my hand." She whispered, reaching through the bars. Codex questioned it for a second, then decided to do it to comfort Fox. He reached through the bars and grabbed Fox's hand. The guard was looking at them, and gave a face of confusion, then just let it go.
"What do you think they're going to do to us?" Fox whispered, pressing several bobby pins into Codex's hand. Codex took them discreetly. "Nothing." he said with a wink. "Hey, uhmm...guard, Fox would like to have her call?" he told the guard.
Fox grinned wickedly at Codex, before putting on an innocent face. "I need to call my father. He's going to be so worried." She stuck out her bottom lip. Codex watched the guard fumble for his keys and unlocked Fox's cell. Fox walked out, and followed the guard out of the room and into the call cell.
Codex quickly got the bobby pins and did a maneuver to unlock his cell. he made sure to keep one for Fox. Hopefully Fox would keep this call long. He ran to the computer on the officer's desk and started pulling up records and deleting them as fast as possible, which was unbelievably fast, to a normal human.
Fox dialed slowly. She glanced at the guard and smiled sheepishly. "Don't wanna break a nail." She was calling one of her old cells; a phone that couldn't even be traced to her, or Codex. As the call reached voicemail, she started talking. "Hi mama." She paused. "I'm at the police station." She then pretended to cringe, as though someone was yelling at her. "No, I'm okay. I'll talk to you later, okay? Tell dad I said love you." Another pause. "Yes, yes, I know." She shook her head, frowning as though her mother could see. "I have to go now, limited call time and all that." She smiled. "Alright. Bye." Hanging up the phone, she turned back to the guard.
As they ended the holding rooms, Fox looked up to see Codex back in his cell. She winked at him. Then she walked back into the cell and watched as the guard locked it. "Hey, what exactly are we in for anyways? Isn't it like, illegal for you to hold us without telling us why?" The guard grunted and walked over to the computer, looking for files. Nothing was coming up.
Codex looked over at Fox and winked. He enjoyed watching the guards confused face while sneaking Fox her bobby pins back. The guard looked at them and mumbled "I'll be right back" and left to go talk to the Sheriff. Fox giggled slightly. Now all they had to do was sit back and wait.
A few moments later, several men in black suits walked in. Fox glanced at Codex, an unfathomable expression on her face. She narrowed her eyes.
Even Codex was stumped on who they were and why they were here. He inspected one of them. Not FBI. They didn't have the elegance, or the arrogance. He glanced over at the just-as-stumped Fox. He gave her a small shrug of the shoulders.
"Is there a problem?" Codex demanded.
"It seems both of your files have suddenly disappeared. That means that you are either innocent, or that someone hacked into the system. Seeing what you two USED to be charged with, I'm guessing it's option B."
Codex gave Fox a worried look. "Really? That's weird, because I would've definitely chosen A."
Fox frowned. "Do you have evidence that it was US, specifically? Isn't there like, a law that says we're innocent until proven guilty?" She looked up at the men, slightly confused. However, she didn't seem worried. Codex held in laughter as the agents showed confusion.
One of the agents turned to the guard and whispered something into his ear. The guard reluctantly turned and walked out of the room.
"Listen. I don't care about your rights. I don't care if you hacked into the system. That's a minor problem at the moment. You two have to be extremely skilled hackers to pull off a stunt like you did. We need your 'talents' to help resolve a possible...incident." One of the agents calmly explained to them.
Codex looked at Fox, with surprise covering his face. Fox's delicate brows were raised in shock, and suspicion. "You're saying that you want us to work for you?"
One of the agents nodded slowly, as if he were looking at a young child. "And what makes you think that we would?" Fox replied, sounding slightly annoyed at these arrogant agents. Just who did they think they were?
Codex gave the agents looks sending the message that he supported Fox. The agent stared at Fox. "Do you know how much jail time you would face for hacking into a government mainframe? If you work with us, you never will."
Codex was shocked. Were they really willing to give a get out of jail free card? "What is so bad that you have to resort to us?" Codex asked, intrigued. "And what makes you think we can actually do it?" Fox added, still trying to play off the "we're-innocent-until-proven-guilty" card. She frowned when she could practically feel the agent rolling his eyes beneath his dark shades.
"It's confidential. You won't know anything until you agree to our case." He answered coolly. Fox paused, glancing at Codex. "What are your conditions?" She was highly suspicious of these suited men, and she'd often had problems with government officials and their compromises in the past.
The agent, never breaking eye contact with Fox, answered "Conditions? There are no conditions! You help us, we help you. It's as simple as that. So what do you say?" Codex thought for a moment, and turned his head to look at Fox. Once he caught her eye, he gave her a look, and a hand gesture telling her that the choice is up to her.
Fox narrowed her eyes at the agents. "I don't believe you. There's always a catch here; nothing in your department could be that simple. If you want our help, tell us what we're getting into."
The agents exchanged a long look. The tallest one, probably the leader of the group, stepped forward. He crouched down and whispered something in Fox's ear. Her eyes grew wide and she pulled, face paled. She glanced at Codex before nodding at the agents. "Alright."
Codex looked at Fox in amazement. What could the agent have said to have her make up her mind that fast? He motioned tward the agent to signify that he was waiting to be told the same thing. The agent rolled his eyes, and walked over to Codex's cell and whispered the same thing. Codex had the same reaction as Fox, and saw why they were needed.
"I...I..had no idea..." Codex studdered. The agents let Fox and Codex out of their already unlocked cells. Fox narrowed her eyes at the agents. They werent supposed to tell Codex. She stood, dusted off her clothes, and strolled out of the room, ignoring all the men.
Codex stood and ran after Fox. "Why didn't you tell me?" He shouted after her.
