"There sure is a line out there" I said while I put on my starbucks apron on. I pretty big line. Starbucks usually attracts at least 30 customers per day but there were at least 30 customers in that one line.
"Now, don't try to jinx us young lady. Business is going pretty good these few weeks" replied Michelle with a teasing tone. "Don't want that old man up our ass." She was referring to David, the man who ownes this place. David tends to yell at us if we don't get a lot of customers, like it's actually our fault.
"Sorry," I said with a smile.
Anyways, Michelle was right, business was going well for the past few weeks. Probably because it's the start of a new year, a year I won't be looking forward to. A frown immediatly spread across my lips.
An hour later, the line was gone except for one last group of costumers.
"Hey, welcome to Starbucks, what may I get you?" I said while I opened the cash register.
I heard someone giggle and ignored it. Nobody replied, so I looked up and repeated in an annoyed tone, "Welcome to Starbucks, what can I get y-" I stopped immediatly.
In front of me was a guy around my age. He had short soft brown hair, twinkling brown eyes, and a really strong jawline. A smile slowly spread across his lips. His skin was a perfect creamy olive tone. I shook my head and looked back at him, and in a boring tone I said for the third time, "Welcome, what can I get you?"
"Uh, can I get a m-" He got cut off by the sound of my phone ringing. I got all nervous inside, because my phone never rings unless it was an emergency.
"Um. C-can you hold on a s-sec?" I said, all nervous.
"Yeah, sure. Go ahead" was his reply. I gave him a weak smile and flipped open my phone.
"Hello?" I said.
"Katy, is that you? You need to come home. I know you're at work but you really need to come home" somene said on the other line.
"Catherine, is that you?" I said.
"Yes it is, and i'll do whatever I can to get your job back if you get fired, but please Katy, come home now!" Catherine said.
I could tell immediatly something was wrong. Catherine's voice was shaky and I could tell she had been crying.
"Catherine, I'm going to come home, but please tell me right now what's wrong. You're freaking me out!" I said, actually starting to freak out.
I saw Michell work her way through the tables coming towards me. Is everything okay? she mouthed. I nodded. The boy in front of me had a worried exprerssion too.
"I'll exp-" I cut her off.
"Catherine. No. I know when something is wrong and I need to know!" I said.
"Okay okay but-" I heard talking in the background, a lot of commotion. "You're dad h-" Catherine got interrupted but a huge siren, that I could hear through the phone.
Oh no, I thought. No, this can not be happening. Everything fit into place. This can not, I mean can not be happening.
You know that saying that goes like "It felt as though everything slowed down and I couldn't think"? Well, that was happening right now. My mind was rushing into conclusions, running against time. Everything was a blur, my throat started to itch, and my nose got that tingly and burning sensation at the tip, the feeling i always got before I start crying. The tears were coming out before I could even bring together what was happening.
"Katy? Katy? Katy listen to me, I need you to listen to me. We need you to stay focus more then ever right now, okay sweety?" Catherine said. Her voice sounded miles and miles away.
"He's gone isn't he? Get to the point Catherine, he's gone! My dad is just plain old gone! Isn't he? He is right?" I said. I was starting to yell. "He freaking gone."
"Katy, listen. Something just happened to his heart and he has a chance of l-" I cut her off.
"Yeah, five percent chance! Just admit it, he's dead!" I yelled.
"Katy listen, we'll talk about this when you get home, just well, get home now!" Catherine said. I heard the buzzing of the phone line. Great, she hung up.
I tear slipped out again. It trickled down my cheek, and down under my chin.
"Katy, it will be fine. It's all going to be okay. You know we all are here for you" said Michelle.
That's what my mom and dad said. Too bad there gone.
