"I completely failed that test," Liam groaned as he hid his head in shame. "Failed with a capital 'F'." The rest of my friends laughed, I did too.
"Probably not," I tried and rested a hand on his shoulder. "Highest grade you can get, for you, is a seventy-five." Liam picked up his head, slightly, and glared at me.
Classes were over for the day and my friends decided to spend the rest of our afternoon at the park, well I did. They just followed me, grudgingly. Liam was lying face first on the ground, with Mitchell and Sylvie playfully jabbing each other with their pencils on top of the rock, and Sara sitting next to me, using me as her human pillow, while texting. Me, I kept thinking about Carter.
Not in the romantic, totally hot new kid way. More in the: I think he's my stalker, kind of way. It was a coincidence that the same day I received the locket, the notes, and started hearing voices was the same day that Carter appeared. I'm not one who believed in coincidences.
So, I mentally thought about how he could be my stalker. He was knew to Lilimoore, which already sent up some red flags, no one was ever knew in Lilimoore. Ever. Then he just happened to run into me on his first day in school. Not to mention, he thought that the locket was beautiful.
Okay, sure it may have been some paranoia taking over....okay a lot of paranoia taking over, but something about him just didn't sit well with me.
"Hey, it's the new kid," Sara said.
I glanced in her direction and there he was. Speak of the devil and he shall appear. He was strolling through the park, hands stuffed in his pockets, hair pulled in a ponytail, completely oblivious to the world. That was until Sara got curious.
"Hey, Carter," she called. "Over here!"
Sara didn't see it, but she had just pulled Carter from a deep thought. He squinted his eyes at us, before realizing that we were really there and walked over to us.
"Hi," he said.
"Hi," Sara said with a bright smile and tucked her phone in her pocket.
"Hi," he said again, this time to me.
" 'Sup?" I said.
"I'm guessing he didn't do well on the math test?" Carter asked as he pointed at Liam who was still sulking.
"He thinks he bombed it," I said. "I still have hope that he'll pass by a thread, a really thin thread."
Carter chuckled. "Quite the supportive friend aren't you. Nori, right?"
"Yes, that's Nori," Sara said. "I'm Sara and I didn't know you two met."
"Yeah," I said. "Carter is in my geometry class with Liam."
"And I almost took her arm off, beforehand," he said.
I chuckled next. "Nah, it would've taken a lot more strength to take off my arm. "
"Good to know," Carter said.
"So, Carter," Sara said as she jumped to her feet. "What are you doing here? Taking an afternoon stroll through Grove Park?" I rolled my eyes at Sara, she was being her natural flirty self.
"No, although it is a lovely park," Carter said and turned to look at me. "I'm trying to find my way around town. Actually, someone did promise me a tour of the town, when she was free and by the looks of it, she is."
I smiled politely, remembering my promise. Sara caught on too, and spoke before I could open my mouth. "Nori, is totally free. She would love to give you a tour of the town.," she said. Sara then gave this look that told me that I didn't have a choice.
