Fire Drill

The carpet made my legs itch even though I was wearing tights. My dress was scratchy and a little too small but my mother refused to buy me another. I've always been deemed an outcast, bullied, and always left behind. Although Harley didn't mind my presence, her mother hates me.

"Millie quit picking at your tights!" Mrs. Leah yelled, smacking my hand away with a ruler.

"Yeah Millie, quit picking at your tights!" Cameron yelled from the other side of the carpet. Bea and Darron snickering at his antics.

Harley frowned and sat beside me, "Don't worry, I think this carpet is itchy too."

I smiled slightly and turned towards Mrs. Leah, waiting for the lesson to start.

Everything went by slowly, but recess came around soon enough. I sat on the swings alone while Cameron, Bea, and Darron sat on the grass. Harley wasn't allowed outside so Mrs. Leah stayed with her.

I stared at the weeds beneath me and slightly kicked my legs. I remained silent only to hear Cameron talking rather loudly.

"I'll pull the lever for fun, yell fire, then I'll just run!" he laughed.

My eyes widened, "Cameron, that isn't very smart."

"Shut up!" Darron yelled.

I stayed quiet as we went back inside. Knowing Mrs. Leah wouldn't do anything if I told her what Cameron planned to do. It was lunchtime anyway, she would be busy.

"Millie, are you alright?" Harley asked as she sat beside me.

"Ew, Harley, don't talk to the weird one. Come sit with us, the cool kids!" Bea laughed, and Cameron giggled as well.

I'd had enough, "You must not know my heart, but I know it isn't your fault. You don't get out very much do you, Bea?"

"Millie! Enough with your attitude! Eat in silence!" Mrs. Leah yelled from across the room.

"Don't worry," Cameron whispered as he walked by. "This fire drill will be the best yet."

Harley gave me a puzzled look, I quickly pulled out a scrap piece of paper and scribbled down Cameron's plan. I slid the note to her secretly, or so I thought.

"Millie, go to the office! I've had enough of you!" She snatched the note away and read it for herself. "Cameron? Pulling the fire alarm? How delusional are you?"

I didn't say anything, I pushed away from Harley and out the door. Maybe the Headmaster will believe me.

The walk through the church took forever, mostly because I was lost. I finally stumbled into the office and walked up to the relatively large desk.

"Excuse me?" I whispered.

A man leaned over the desk, a warm smile across his face. "Millie! So nice to see you," he laughed. "What brings you here sweet child?"

I looked down at my shoes, "Mrs. Leah sent me down here, she said I was being rude."

He frowned slightly, "Don't mind her, head back on up to class alright? If she has problems, tell her to come to me."

A smile returned to my face. As I turned to leave I stopped in my tracks, I could tell him about Cameron. "Actually Headmaster, I have something to tell you."

"Hm? What is it, Millie?" He asked.

"Cameron said he was going to pull the-" The ringing started, it was deafening. Headmaster quickly stood to take my hand, pulling me out of the office.

"Millie, we have to get outside." He yelled as he began to turn the corner.

To my surprise, I didn't see Cameron yet. It took many twists and turns to make it out of the maze.

We finally went outside to see Mrs. Leah with Harley, Bea, Darron, and Cameron. Cameron was whispering into Mrs. Leah's ear.

She stormed up to the Headmaster, "You found the troublemaker! Good, her parents are on their way."

"Troublemaker? How so?" The Headmaster asked.

"She pulled the fire alarm!" Cameron shouted. I looked at him with disbelief.

"Nonsense, she was with me when it happened." The Headmaster snapped.

Cameron froze, he quickly looked up at Mrs. Leah. "Now Mrs. Leah, you know I wouldn't do that! I went to the restroom that's right outside the classroom."

I looked at Mrs. Leah and then at the Headmaster. No way they were buying this.

"I think Millie should have detention for causing all this trouble," Cameron giggled.

The Headmaster shook his head, "Actually if anyone should have detention it's you Cameron. Millie, what do you think?"

"Actually, I don't hold anger anymore, even for people who hurt and betrayed me," I whispered. "We're on the same side, Cameron."

He quickly ran away, "I'm getting out of here!"

A/N : This wasn't as long as I would have liked, but the song only lasts so long and I ran out of inspiration quickly.
