Libby POVI got woken up by my loud ass alarm, which was letting me know it was time for me to get up and get ready for work. I work at Dash, the local cafe. I know most people hate their jobs, but I happen to love mine.
Everybody treats me like family and the customers are also very respectful and nice to me. I know almost everybody who comes to the cafe because I have been working there since I was 16, now I am 18 and fresh out of high school. I also have my own apartment now.
I head to the bathroom to start my daily hygiene routine. Once I finished, I went back to my room to put my work clothes on. As I was doing so, I received an incoming facetime call from one of my co-workers, Janay. I answered her call and propped her up so I could continue getting ready.
"Heyyy Libby, how are you feeling today?" was the first thing she asked me. Janay was like the mom of the whole cafe. She always made sure everybody was okay. Janay was only 25 but she acted way older than her age. "Heyyy boo, I'm feeling okay, I was actually able to get some rest last night so that's good" was my response to her question.
"Yeah? I'm glad you were able to get some rest because I hate seeing my baby look so tired while working" she said followed by a pout on her face. I laughed at her facial expressions and she joined in laughing also. After all the laughter died down she said: "Okay baby, let me drop Jania off at my mom's house and I'll see you at the cafe".
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention Janay has a three-year-old daughter. That's probably why she treats us all like her kids. I replied with "Okay boo, and tell my baby I said hiii and that I miss her so much. ''Okay will do, make sure you drive safely ""Same to you".
After I said that I ended the call and I head towards my front door to put my shoes and coat on so I could leave. Once I did that, I locked my door and headed out the building to my car.
>>>>>>>>> at the cafe
I arrived at the cafe on time of course. I hated being late that's why I always woke up early enough to make sure I had enough time to get ready and get here. I signed myself in after greeting our regulars who were either in-line or sitting down. I put my name tag on, grabbed my notepad, and headed towards the customers who were dining in. Once I looked around I noticed an unfamiliar face, so I approached the customer's table.
"Good morning welcome to Dash, would you like to hear our specials?" as I talked she kept direct eye contact with me which I surprisingly held. This woman was beautiful as hell, let me describe her, she was masculine-presenting, brown skin, with shoulder length locs. She also had tattoos and a few piercings. "This is my first time here, I'm new to the neighborhood, what do you suggest?". She said still not breaking eye-contact with me.
Her voice plus her attractiveness was enough to make me have a gay panic, but since I was at work, I kept my composure. "I figured you were new since I didn't recognize you" I said with a slight laugh, "I would suggest something simple like a french vanilla coffee just for you to try, oh and our chocolate croissants are to die for".
After looking over the menu one last time she looked back up to me and smiled. "Sounds good, I'll take two croissants and a medium french vanilla coffee", she said while closing her menu.
"Okay I'll have that out to you as soon as possible, also what are your pronouns ?, just to be on the respectful side". I said after taking down her order and picking up her menu. She looked surprised that I asked that question.
"My pronouns are she/her and you ?". "Mine are the same" I said with a smile which made her smile in return. After our little encounter was over I walked to the back to put her order in. It's always good to ask people their pronouns just to respect who they are as a person.
As I walked back to the kitchen area to put the customers' order in, I couldn't help but to keep smiling. The woman was very attractive. As I was in my own world, Janay noticed me smiling. "Who has you feeling so cheery and happy?" she asked with a grin. I couldn't help but grin harder, so hard that my dimples started to show. "It's a new customer out there and I don't know she's really attractive"
"You should definitely ask for her number" Janay Replied. "Oh no, I can't do that, that would be so unprofessional", I said, a bit taken back by her suggestion. I wouldn't want her to think I was trying to force myself upon her because we had one good conversation about the menu. "Girl this a local cafe, we're not some upscale high end restaurant" she said with an eye roll
"And plus, I don't remember the last time you even had a romantic interest. This can be good for you, even if it's just a little flirting." She finished off her sentence while handing me the customers' order. "I'll think about it, no promises though" I said with a small smirk on my face as I grabbed the tray of food from her.
As I headed back out to give the customer her food, she saw me coming and re-positioned her things she had on the table so I could sit her tray of food down. "And here you go ma'am, I hope you like your order" I said with a small friendly smile. "You don't have to call me ma'am, you can call me September," she said, returning the smile back.
"Well okay September, you let me know if there's anything else I can do for you, I'll be at the front counter or walking around taking orders", "Will do". As I walked away I could feel her staring at me, so I slightly turned my head and we locked eyes. She didn't try to break eye contact, she actually drank her coffee while still staring at me. I was the first to break eye contact.
I continued on doing my job, taking orders, running orders out, and occasionally laughing with the customers who were regulars. As I glanced at September, she seemed to be taking her last sip of coffee while reading her book. September caught me staring and waved me over. When I got to her table, I asked if she was ready to get the bill, to which she told me yes. I went to the register to print out her bill which only came up to eight dollars.
I put the bill down on her table, and I watched her pull out a twenty dollar bill. Before I could respond she told me the change was my tip. I had to go get the pen because I had forgotten it when I printed out her receipt. When I returned, she wrote down the tip. After that she started to gather her belongings so she could head out.
" I hope you enjoyed your food here September and hopefully you become a regular here" I said with a smile, to which she returned. That only made me smile harder. "The food was good, I forgot to thank you for the great recommendation you gave me, it definitely looks like I'll be returning because I just started school out here" she informed me.
Now I was curious because I too had just started my college courses at Delaware State. "Oh really? What school?, I just started school as well", "Delaware State, I'm in my junior year now, I transferred from North Carolina Central", Hearing the news made me surprised. "I go to Delaware State too, except this is my freshman year there". "Oh so you're just starting out?" she replied amused.
"Yeahhh, well I hope to see you around campus sometime", "Or you can just text my number" she said gesturing to the receipt. I looked at the receipt and sure enough, her phone number was on there. That made me cheese so hard, I'm not even going to lie. I didn't want to ask for her number so I'm glad she wrote it down. "Your smile is so cute especially when you show your dimples, but anyways, I do have to be on my way now, just text me whenever" I blushed, "Thank you and okay, I'll text you when I get off today". We ended the conversation with a head nod as she walked out the door.
After September left, I continued on with my shift once again. I did however go to the back and tell Janay how September left me her number and also how we attend the same school so we'd be seeing each other around campus. We raved like two little girls, jumping up and down while smiling.
After our little celebration, time went by fast, before I knew it, it was time to lock the place up and go home.
