Okay, I admit it. After the first few cracks in the window I peed myself. Don't judge me. After that they hit the window with more and more vigour. It was like they could smell it. I was beginning to wish I hadn't stayed to watch the show. Maybe I should have just gone with my plan. Wait! Maybe I still could... if I was careful.
Once I got through the bathroom door I threw up from nerves. It's a defence mechanism, I tell myself. Perfectly normal. Then I locked the door and grabbed a rushed shower. Then I went into my parents' bedroom, also joined to the bathroom. I rummaged around, and found some suitable clothes in my mothers' cupboard. Then, breathing in the smell of her, I crept carefully down the hall.
I locked every door I came across, in the dubious hope that they wouldn't get through. Or at least they would be slowed down considerably before they noticed I was gone, which they soon would. They may have lost their faces, but they still had their brains. I left via the front door and ran until I got to Lois' house.
I knocked frantically on the door. Footsteps. "It's me!" I cried, "Lemme in!" I saw her eye at the peephole. Then I heard her sigh as she unbolted, unchained, unlocked and unwedged the door. I heard something being dragged. She poked her red face around the door, looked suspiciously behind me, and ushered me inside. She quickly relocked the door. I kicked in the wedges and helped her drag a table in front. "Did it follow you? Please tell me it didn't follow you!" She pleaded. She sounded a little wistful. "I...I don't think so..." I said.
Lois was full of questions, "What did they look like with new faces? Were there any faces you recognised? What's it like outside?" and so on. I didn't even get the chance to answer her question before another was fired at me. "Lois please. She probably doesn't feel like talking about it right now," her brother cut in. "Right, Oli?"
Her brother. Jamie Cameron. The first time I saw him I practically died. His dark hair looked so careless (probably was) and casual, swept slightly to one side like he'd just got back from the beach. His electric blue eyes pierced right through me. Where did he get eyes so blue? He's also a really great guy. He's really nice in a way that's not too nice. I bet he thinks I'm such a dweeb though. He's just too nice to say so. He's got a girlfriend anyway, I'll bet.
"Not really," I mumbled. "I mean I don't really feel like talking. Right now...uh...yeah." Dammit Oli! Say something normal! Please? Just this once? Jamie laughed. Ha. Ha. I'm just so funny. He acts like I'm hilarious, but in his mind I know there is that little word bouncing around. Dweeb...dweeb...dweeb... Then Lois said, "Dweeb." I looked up sharply. Did I say that aloud or something? But she was looking at Jamie, an eyebrow raised. Huh? I opened my mouth to say something else stupid, when there was a crash at the door. Something had thrown itself into it.
I saw the alarm in their eyes. A little more excitement in Lois' eyes, a little more worry in Jamie's. Lois always wanted to be out there, to know what it was like. Jamie knew what it was like and didn't wan't Lois anywhere near it. He did his best to protect his little sister, but she was so stubborn.
