Elena Diaz and Temperance Brennan have been friends since they were children. Their families were really close, and unknown to them at the time, their parents were career criminals. When they were the age of fifteen, their parents packed up and left their children in order to protect them from the gang of bank robbers that they once worked for.

Elena, Temperance, and Elena's brother Miguel went into foster care together, until Temperance's grandfather got the three of them out and helped raise them. Temperance and Elena have kept in touch with each other and update each other on the things going on in their lives. Elena is a mother to a beautiful three year old daughter, and has a lustrous career as a FBI Agent in the Cyber Division.

When the remains her and Elena's mothers are identified in the Jeffersonian, she calls in her best friend to help her with the case. While helping on their mother' cases, Elena falls in love with not only the science work of it all, but also the homicide solving work she got to do wit the FBI, so she makes a decision to transfer to the homicide unit within the FBI and move to Washington, DC. Along the way, she finds love in the most unexpected way.
