Jason and Madelyn sat in the school's library eating their lunches. Madelyn had brought a small striped lunch bag with a thermos of homemade chili and a side of cornbread, which was extravagant compared to Jason's school lunch consisting of boiled burger patties and cardboard buns. He had finally convinced her to spare a lump of cornbread after a few minutes of practically begging on his knees.
"Ok so," Madelyn started after handing Jason the cornbread, "why exactly did you get us in trouble?" She popped a spoonful of chili into her mouth, staring expectantly at her friend.
Jason tried to avoid the question by eating the sustenance that Madelyn handed him. It tasted like heaven compared to the stiff bread and radioactive cheese he was stuck with. "Did you make this? This is godly!"
"No, actually, my mommy made it," Madelyn suddenly sounded like an excited three year old, but reverted back to her usual self a split second later. "Now stop being a coward and tell me what happened."
"Well, uh..." Jason procrastinated. What did actually happen? He knew it involved Trevor, and a Twinkie, and Trevor...
"Jaaasssoonnnnn," Madelyn hummed while eating another spoonful of chili. He was still lost in his own head. Something about Trevor just made him...
"Jason!"
He was snapped out of his thoughts when Madelyn's fist collided with his bicep. "AAH—" he let out and flopped dramatically into the couch he was sitting on. "What was that for?"
"For being a fucking simp!" Madelyn exclaimed, leaning forward and slamming her free hand on the armrest of the armchair she was on.
Jason looked at her for a few seconds, glowing red and laughing nervously. "I don't know what you're talking about..." he trailed off, picking at a wilted salad he was forced to take from the cafeteria kitchen. Madelyn gave him a 'you've gotta be kidding me' look and gave a breathy laugh.
"I don't understand what you see in him anyway," she sat back in her chair and took a bite of cornbread. "He's not even hot!"
"You don't think any guy is hot. There's a reason you have two girlfriends." Jason crossed his arms, almost like a toddler throwing a tantrum.
"Two very happy girlfriends, mind you! I know how to treat my women." Madelyn gave a proud smirk and finished off her chili, pulling out a pack of Little Bites.
"Birthday cake flavor?!" Jason yelled. They were his favorites, and Madelyn knew it.
"Yup. And you don't get any unless you tell me why you're into Trevor of all people." Madelyn popped a Little Bite into her mouth, taunting her best friend with a devious smirk.
"Hey, I never said I was into him! I just find him... I dunno, intriguing?"
"Well THAT'S bullshit." She ate another Little Bite.
"Come on! He's just... come on! I'm not even that into him!" Jason pleaded, practically begged Madelyn to spare the last two of his favorite dessert.
"Keep spewin' bullshit Jason. See where it get's ya." Madelyn suddenly gained a southern accent to accompany her threat whilst eating a third Little Bite. Jason groaned and shook his head.
"Fine! He's kind of hot, ok? And he's kinda intriguing... You've never seen him shirtless." Jason said defensively. "Can I please have the last one now?"
"Bleh. Nor do I want to..." her lip curled in disgust as she ate the last Little Bite, a sly smirk coming across her face.
Flabbergasted, Jason scoffed dramatically. "What the hell? I told you!"
"You didn't do it fast enough, my guy," she said with a hint of sarcasm, much like she did when Hershel Samuel Davis (everyone called him by his full name) flirted with her in the lunch room.
"I was never given a time limit!"
"I do what I want," Madelyn laughed as she pulled a second bag of Little Bites out of her lunch bag and tossed them into his lap. He grabbed them quickly and let out an annoyed groan as the bell signaling 6th period rang. Madelyn giggled and stood, throwing her bag over her shoulder and giving a goodbye to a highly annoyed Jason. He packed up his stuff, threw away his remaining lunch—which was most of it—and went into the bathroom to make sure he looked presentable. He had three classes with Trevor: second period English, sixth period Astronomy, and seventh period PE. The seating chart had them sitting on completely opposite sides of the room, which saddened Jason ever so slightly, but he was happy he could actually pay attention in his favorite class.***
The air outside was a cool breeze when Jason was grabbed by the arm by a very large strong hand and yanked along the side of the school building. Trevor looked down at Jason with cold angry eyes. Jason blushed ever so slightly.
"The fuck are you blushing at?" Trevor's face contorted into a confused scowl.
"I—uh..." Jason rushed to answer. "It's... REALLY cold you here, dontcha think?" Jason glowed an even brighter red and sunk into his shirt slightly.
"What?" Trevor's way of speaking made Jason's head fuzzy. How could a speech impediment sound so appealing?
"OUT here! Cold! Out here... yeah... heh." Jason could barely control his breathing. He was making a fool of himself and Trevor was already looking at him as if he were a complete freak.
"Uhh, okay?" He loosened his grip on Jason's arm and squinted his eyes at him. "Are you good, dude?"
"H-hey, listen Tweva, I—" Oh SHIT he thought and mentally slapped himself. What was he doing? He could not have fucked this up more.
"The fuck did you just call me?" Trevor gave a highly concerned look and tilted his head slightly. "You know what, never mind. I was gonna ask why the fuck I keep catching you staring but honestly I don't want to know anymore." He took a step back and started to turn away.
"N-No, Twev—I mean, Trevor!"
"Making fun of the kid with a speech impediment? Really? I didn't realize you were that kind of person."
Fuck. Jason scrambled to think of anything to say that could make this better but all the could think of was Trevor's grip on his arm. What the hell was he supposed to do? If he didn't try Trevor would never talk to him again.
"Trevor wait! I'm sorry. I didn't mean to freak you out, I swear!"
Trevor stopped and turned around, an inquisitive look on his face. His strawberry blonde beard seemed even brighter in the sun. "Then why the fuck do I keep catching you staring at me? What else do you want to take from me, you fucking colonizer?"
"I...what?" It was Jason's turn to be confused. What had Jason ever taken from Trevor? Is that why he'd been hostile?
"That's what I thought, colonizer." Trevor turned on his heel and walked towards his red Pontiac. Jason decided to let him go; it was no use trying to fight to get him to stay at this point. He turned to walk to his BMW and opened the drivers side door. Before he could get all the way in, Madelyn, from the passenger's seat, slapped Jason on the arm.
"What the fuck did you do to him?"
From behind Jason, his sister Katie had a confused smile on her face. "Don't worry, I filled her in," Madelyn laughed as Jason started the vehicle.
