Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is located in Hogwarts Castle, a large castle somewhere in the Highlands of Scotland. The castle has extensive grounds with sloping lawns, flowerbeds and vegetable patches, a loch, a large dense forest, several greenhouses and other outbuildings, and a full-size Quidditch Pitch. There is also an owlery, which houses all the owls owned by the school and those owned by students. There are 142 staircases, which are known to move, in the massive castle, which is set upon huge rocks above a magnificent lake. The school is known for being the oldest of the Wizarding schools as well as the most notable. Hogwarts has the reputation of consistently winning the Triwizard Tournament because of its reputation of educating the most renowned and greatest wizards of all time. As the crown jewel of the wizarding schools, Hogwarts is often envied by its competitors.

Thought to be situated somewhere in the Pyrenees, visitors speak of the breath-taking beauty of a chateau surrounded by formal gardens and lawns created out of the mountainous landscape by magic. Beauxbatons Academy has a preponderance of French students, though Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Luxembourgians and Belgians also attend in large numbers The French school is unique in that it is the only institution that begins to teach its students before they are able to perform magic. Students are recruited when they begin to display signs of magic, as young as seven years old. Students are taught French History, Etiquette, Wand Safety, and how to control their magical abilities long before they ever learn a spell or hold a wand in their hand. Standard classes normally begin around age eleven. Student relationships are normally quite close, as classmates are practically raised together nine months out of the year. Beauxbatons prides itself not only on it's extensive schooling, but on it's welcoming attitude towards those with mixed heritage. The school is made up of almost 50% muggleborns, and those with veela heritage are commonplace. While Beauxbaton has no official uniform, students are expected to be well dressed, and it is traditional to dress in the colors of the school, pale blue, white, and gold.
