_____________________________________________" That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me. " — Edgar Allan PoeThe school bell rang and it echoed the hallway of South Park High, students scurried in an attempt to reach their next class as quickly as possible. In the hallway, a petite boy squeezed his way past the group of girls who stood around chatting about whatever was mainstream. The boy's name was Pete Thelman, but, everyone knew him as the "Red Goth". His nickname sprouted from his appearance, his scarlet teased hair that had black tips and his gothic clothing that consisted of his usual dark-grey dress shirt that had ruffles down the neck and flared sleeves which made the fake ruby in his silver bolo tie stand out. His laced up, black, flare jeans were as odd to people as his purple winklepickers that had numerous buckles. As he passed the girls he couldn't help but scoff and made his way down to the gymnasium, his raven colored eyes that blended with his eyeliner scanned the area. Before his third period P.E started, he came down early to hide underneath the dark brown bleachers instead of participating in any of the horrid games they played. Pete sat down on the light brown floor and let out a sigh, he'd needed a cigarette to ease the pain of attending multiple classes with conformists who blabbed like sheep. However, the boy knew he couldn't smoke in the gym since the smell of smoke would reveal the coach where he was and it would lead to an hour of boring detention. Instead of smoking, he opened the book that rested underneath his arm when he was walking to the gymnasium. Greatest Works of Edgar Allan Poe, a book he took from the school's library. When he found the book, he was surprised that they had it compared to the rest of the shitty books the library had just to make the shelves full. Of course, he didn't plan to return it after he finished it since he knew no one else would read the book and he knew that the librarian wouldn't even care nor notice the book had gone missing. His pale fingers that were decorated with silver rings was curled around the book, before he took out his blood-red phone and blasted Sacrifice by London After Midnight. Pete flipped his fringe that hid the scattered acne and pockmarks near his forehead, he also had pockmarks and acne on both cheeks. Compared to the rest of the goth kids, Pete had the most acne that he'd didn't bother to cover up.
As the lean boy continued to read, the other students began to play dodgeball. One of the dodgeballs rolled towards behind the bleachers, " Dude Mike, pass the ball ! " A boy said to the boy who was sitting on the bleachers. The slim yet tall boy lifted his head from the book he was re-reading, New Moon, the sequel of Twilight. " It's Vampir. " He replied, his new fang fillings caused him to have a lisp. Mike ' Vampir ' Makowski, he was known for being the leader of the former Vamp Kids. However, the rest of the Vamp Kids ended up outgrowing their Twilight phase and left the clique for good. Somehow, Mike was still into vampirism and explored more media depictions of vampires that wasn't just Twilight. From 5th grade to now a freshman, his appearance had little to no changes. His jet-black hair was dyed a neon lime and it was longer, causing him to tie some of it to the back, revealing the bat wing earrings he had including the other numerous earrings he had and the plastic vampire ears he wore. Similar to his 5th grade outfit, he wore an obnoxiously long leather jacket that had a variety of pins and patches of bands that he had sown on himself. Underneath the jacket, he wore a graphic tee that looked that it was straight out of Hot-Topic. His black, ripped jeans had layered rhinestone belts that he spent a majority of his allowance on, his heavy, buckled boots thumped as he made his way down the bleachers. Mike's emerald eyes that popped due to his eyeliner and mascara searched for the ball, he then made his way to behind the bleachers. The ball rolled towards Pete's feet, but he did not move at all. The silent boy was too busy indulged in his book to recognize the ball was near him.
" Pete ? "
Somehow, Pete was able to hear Mike's irritating voice over his music and lifted his head from his book. " Oh great. " He mumbled, " What do you want , Dracula? " He added, before removing his pausing and looking down at his book. Mike noticed the book he was reading, " You're a fan of Edgar Allen Poe per se? " He asked, trying to make conversation. Honestly, Mike had been lonely recently since all of his friends were the Vamp Kids and since no one really wanted to listen to him go on a breathless spiel about vampires. Since he saw Pete by himself, he attempted to talk to him even after Pete and the rest of the goth kids did kidnap him. Pete sighed the second he heard the words, ' per se ', escape Mike's pierced lips. He never let out of that old habit: using per se in every statement he made. " Shouldn't you be drinking clamato juice with the rest of those vampire freaks ? Or are you doing it by yourself ? " He harshly commented, although Pete was the only goth kid here right now so it only made him look like he was in a similar situation with Mike. Mike remained silent and reached for the bright yellow dodgeball, Pete noticed the frown on Mike's face and closed his book. " Yeah, I was reading Annabel Lee. " He corrected his response and noticed at Mike's jade-colored eyes, somehow he couldn't help but stare at them. Mike paused and met Pete's gaze, " Annabel Lee, a beautiful poem about love . I didn't think you'd enjoy it based on your dark demeanor . " He smirked .
" I never said I enjoyed it , I said I was reading it . " The red goth replied before adding, " It's not a bad poem , it's just — love like that doesn't seem real . This poem just makes people believe this kind of love exists, then they wake up to the cruel, cold darkness and reality of life. It's all pain. " Mike knew the goth kids were dark and fathomed the pain of life, but he was slightly surprised by his interpretation. " Well , I don't think that's what Poe really meant . Perhaps , he was trying to explain that this kind of love does exist and we don't realize it at first , per se. " The taller boy stated, " Kind of like Twilight . " Pete grew a confused expression, " I've never watched Twilight, it's for conformists. Before you go on your geeky speech," he scooted over a bit, " Sit down , it already aches me to talk to you and you standing is about to ache my neck . " He rolled his eyes before looking down and removing his wired headphones, his finger grazed the variety of goth-like earrings he had. Mike couldn't help by grow a goofy smile, revealing the dimples he had. He sat beside Pete and turned to look at him , suddenly his light expression dropped and he gained a rather serious look. " You haven't watched it ? Well , basically Bella is this girl who ends up meeting Edward, the main vampire . " For a couple of minutes, Mike went on about the plot of Twilight and Pete tried to listen, but with how close Mike was, he felt his cheeks warm up. Now looking at Mike, he somehow looked different: before he looked like some dorky kid who tried to be goth or even worse—emo. Now, he doesn't look as dorky as before. The raven-eyed boy wasn't sure if it was due to the piercings he had: a septum, two lip piercings and his eyebrow piercing. He was surprised how his parents let him get all those piercings, when Pete's father found out about the ear piercings Henrietta gave him, he went on an effortless lecture about piercings. As Pete continued to examine Vampir's face, he suddenly realized he wasn't paying any attention. " It's like, Bella and Edward had this connection that was unexplainable. When Edward first met Bella, he was deeply attracted to her to the point he couldn't control it no matter what he wanted to do. Bella believed that he'd hated her for an odd reason, but later on they had a love that Jacob was envious of — like the angels in the poem ! " Edward had an odd attraction towards Bella, something unexplainable. Those words rang in Pete's mind, no matter how much he held hatred towards Mike there was something that would override the hatred with another strange feeling. He thought that he wanted Mike to just shut up and never talk to him ever again, but he wanted to listen to him talk. Isn't that strange? Pete turned away and looked down at the floor, " That's gay . " Those were the only words he could say at the moment. Mike let out a low sigh, " Do you ever let go of that dark attitude? " he whispered. " I've never felt love like that , it's conformist and gay . " Pete ignore Mike's comment and looked at him from the corner of his eye. " You never know , love can happen at anytime even with someone you'd least expect it with . " The vamp boy grew a light smile, before the two sat in silence.Suddenly, the bell rung and it alerted the boys. " Well , I guess I'll see you later per se? " Mike arose and grinned at Pete. That grin, it was something Pete had never seen before. " Yeah, whatever . " He said and picked up his belongs. As Mike walked away, Pete stood up and lightly kicked the ball Mike was suppose to get. The yellow hall hit the back of Mike's legs which caused him to look back, as the red goth walked past him, he noticed a small smile. A light smile that seemed to be out of the ordinary and odd, yet pleasant.

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee . " — Edgar Allan Poe
