*Kathy’s Point of View*

2007

“Come on, Z!” I say excitedly as I pull my best friend out of his house.

“Whoa, there, Kathy, slow down, you might pull my hand off!” Zayn chuckles, but I still drag him anyway. Today is our 11th Friend-aversary.  We were headed to our park… Technically, it wasn’t ours but we’re always there so we might as well be the owners.

When we arrive, no one was there, just like always. I immediately make my way to our spot, the spot by the swings, under the shadow of the trees. I look back to see if Zayn was following, and he was.

“Can’t you go any faster?” I yell to him, but he just grunts in return. Rolling my eyes, I just wait for him to get here. Soon enough, he’s already laying out the blanket. “Sit your arse down, K.” He looks up at me and rolls his hazel eyes.

We ate the food our moms prepared for our picnic, which consisted of our favorite sandwiches, my mom’s special orange juice, and crisps. After eating the food, we just lied down on the blanket, side by side.

“Happy 11th Friendship Anniversary, Z!” I was about to kiss his cheek when he turned on the last second. My lips landed on his and sparks flew. I turn away from him, blushing.

“I love you Kathy.” Zayn whispers, making me turn to him again. His eyes told me a million things. He loves me, not just as a friend, but also as something more. I knew right then that I loved him, too.

“I love you, too, Zaynie.” I tell him, looking him in the eye. He smiled his genuine smile, the smile that makes my heart melt every time. Then, he looked back up to the sky, and I did, slightly aware of his fingers interlocking with mine.

We walked back to his house, holding hands. My parents were having dinner with his parents so that’s where we’re headed. Zayn stopped walking suddenly, and I look up to see his front door. I turn around to face him, wondering why we stopped walking.

“K, I want you to know that whatever happens, I will always love you, okay?” Zayn asks me seriously. I swallow the lump in my throat and manage a nod. He kisses me on the forehead one last time then opens the door.

“No, Katherine Alana, we don’t approve. That’s final!” My mother exclaims.

“Why don’t you approve, mom, he’s Zayn! My best friend, your best friend’s son! I love him, and he loves me too.” I snap back to my mom.

“You guys are only 14, Katherine! You’re way too young.” She snaps back at me. At that moment, I know that Zayn and I have lost the fight, the fight that had just begun. I look at my father pleadingly, but he just shakes his head and mouths ‘sorry’ to me.
