I laid in the snow. The moon shone red in my eyes. The cold seemed to mildly soothe the pain from the bruises and cracked ribs. The cut above my brow stung in the biting breeze. Tears began to flow and the full moon changed to a shade of pink. I picked myself off the ground and the moon was now the color of the snow; both seemed to glow from reflecting each other's light. I inhaled the cool wind with shallow breaths. The beautiful night sky was riddled with countless stars and the landscape around me had nothing but snow for miles, except for a single line of railroad stretching straight to the western horizon below the moon. Behind me in the eastern darkness was where I came from, a place of misery and suffering. The tears from my eyes turned to ice as they fell to the snow.
Above the moon, another light began to shine. It slowly grew brighter and started to travel down toward the moon, leaving a trail behind it. The body of the light was the color of the moon and snow, but the tail was a myriad of colors like someone streaked a pearl across the sky. I wondered if I made a wish upon that light, would it come true. Clasping my frostbitten hands together, I made my wish.
I wish I could leave this place. I wish I were somewhere that filled people with joy. I wish I could sleep in a warm bed. I wish I could have hot meals every day. I wish I were someplace safe where I wouldn't be beaten every day. I wish I could have people in my life that would care for me. I wish I were free.
Suddenly a violet and crimson aurora illuminated the sky. It curled, churned, and billowed like an iridescent veil. It seemed to give off a warmth that soaked deep into my chest. I had the urge to run, run toward the horizon, run toward the moon, run toward the comet, run toward my wish, and so I ran.
My boots pounded the snow covered tracks beneath me as the snowflakes blew past me. My hair trailed behind me as I ran faster, increasing my pace every few steps. My heart began to race, I felt like I was getting closer to something. Something was there just a little farther. Just a little more and something will happen. I felt myself reach it.
The world around me bent and rippled like a splash into water. Something bright flashed and I closed my eyes, and there were loud noises surrounding me. I opened my eyes as they slowly adjusted to the light; I was amazed at what I saw. I was in a park square, with a red cobbled stone street lined with bright Victorian lamp posts. Parents walking and talking together, children laughing and playing in the grass and on the street, grandparents sitting together on the benches eating crepes. Everyone was well dressed and warm, happy and healthy. The park was surrounded by tall buildings and shopping centers. The trees in the park were all illuminated with strings of lights. In the center of the park there was a fountain that glittered from the lights inside.
