Chapter five

His brother regarded him silently, his expression unchanged. Finally he said, "That does make sense." Jasper released the tension he'd been holding in his chest. "Does mother know?" He asked, his tone indicating he knew her views on the matter. "She was, unhappy, to say the least." He told him solemnly. "That's what I would have guessed. What do you plan on doing about it?" He sighed, gazing at his palms that rested neatly in his lap. "I came to ask for your council."

Nicholas nodded, thinking. "Well, I can tell you right now there's no way they'll let you transition under their roof. Mother cares much too deeply for the status of our family. But, leaving a life of royalty and luxury as a vampire would be terribly challenging. You'd need to keep to the shadows, and you don't even have proper practice feeding." Jasper's spirits sank, it really was a dreadful predicament.

"But." His brother continued after a moment's pause. "If leaving really is what you want, I'll do my best to make some arrangements for you." He smiled at his brother's kindness, once again meeting his warm eyes. "Thank you. I think... I think I may have to leave. An eternity is such a long time to hide myself." Nicholas nodded, as if he already knew that would be his answer.

"I'll work on making some arrangements, but for now just act as if everything is fine. Be kind to mother, go on with her wishes, and try not to raise any suspicion." He instructed. "Of course." "Get on to bed now, we'll talk more tonight." He gave his brother a small hug to show his gratitude. "Rest well Jess." Nicholas told him as he placed his hand on the heavy door handle, then stopped him. "Are you changing your name?" He inquired.

"Yes." He told him. "My name is Jasper." Letting his true name be known made him feel elated, and a thin smile spread across his pale face. "Well, in that case, rest well Jazz" His smile grew wider at the new nickname, and stayed with him all the way until he reached his room.

He was finally going to get to be Jasper, permanently.
