"Rani! Can I talk to you for a second?" Rani blinked and looked over her shoulder at Erilde.

"What is it?" Rani asked, pulling Erilde into an alcove.

"I heard that a dragon's favorite color is their rider's favorite or a color that has something to do with their rider. Wanna test it?" Erilde asked, nearly buzzing with excitement. Rani laughed and nodded.

"Sure, I'll go find Genri, meet up at the lake tomorrow at sun high?" Rani asked. Erilde nodded back and the two separated to find their dragons. Erilde to find her teal green Shaldeth, Rani to find Genreith, her odd, but amazing near black blue. Genreith was usually sleeping at this hour, and on a busy day like today, probably either far away from everyone else or under water to avoid the noise(Genreith having extremely long ranging, sensitive hearing. Genreith once mentioned that she could hear thread falling and everything else that happened in the Weyr). Rani wasn't exactly sure how her dragon avoided drowning by sleeping under water but she had by now learned to stop dwelling on her dragons oddities.

When Rani reached out to her dragon she contacted the softly 'whirling' wall that formed when Genri slept. It was only that night that Rani could talk to her dragon. Genri picked her up and flew up to their star gazing spot. Rani watched her unusually large dragon settle onto her haunches and tilt her face up towards the moon. For some unexplainable reason every time they went up here the moon always was out and shining. Genri always loved the moon and she always sat in it's rays, her body nearly invisible but for the moon light dancing across her scales.

"Genri?" Rani asked, using the quiet tone that was always adopted by both of them while it was night. Genri hummed softly to show she was listening, one eye lazily sliding open to reveal one glowing slit pupiled eye watching her, the colors behind her iris and pupil swirling to show curiosity and relaxation.

"What's your favorite color?" Rani asked. The previously opened eye closed and Genri seemed to consider, her face still facing the moon.

"Purple," Genri said softly and Rani raised her eyebrows in surprise, then listened as the beautiful dark blue dragon continued, "A shade of purple not like the ones you usually see. A purple that was more bluish but still so so purple. A perfectly balanced purple that shown with life. Eyes a color halfway between that perfect shade of purple and a deep vibrant blue. Shining scales the color of the clearest sky at midnight. Other colors I love too, but not as much, colors filled with love that never failed..."

Rani was silent after Genri finished. She could not find words. Genri did not know why she longed for those flashes of color and feeling in her mind. Did not know why she felt such loss for them. Did not know why she felt she would never find them anywhere but her memory. Rani suddenly hugged her glorious, unique dragon and tried to convey everything she didn't have the words to say. Genri nuzzled her and Rani knew she had been understood. The pair watched the stars and fell asleep curled up together.

Rani simply said the next day, "Many many colors, but mostly the most perfect shade of purple."

Erilde did not pressure and went along to say that Shaldeth loved the color of Erilde's eyes and her hair.

The end.
