It's ironic that someone who looks exactly like me from my past life would murder me in this one. Beverly wears a sinister smile, pleased that her rival is about to die. I'm soaked in blood pouring from the wound where she forcefully inserted the knife, which is still embedded in me.In my next life, I hope to either have magic or be a vampire so I can fight back and break the curse of death. Or perhaps the man I love will protect me, and that will break the curse. Elijah has failed me; it's because of him that I'm bleeding out. He should have loved and protected me.Rejects have multiple lives, while vampires and those with magic possess immortality. Rejects endure the same curses from their first lives until they are changed by someone with the power to do so. Mine are death and rejection from the man I love.

I blink, and then she is gone.

Alone in the dark, I imagine Elijah celebrating with his friends, excited to marry Beverly in a few hours.

Suddenly, Elijah is there, crouching beside me, looking worried. "Who did this to you?" My hand reaches for his as he begins to unbutton my shirt to see the wound. "I have to do this," he says. Why does it sound like he cares? I let him continue; I'm dying anyway, so what's the point of modesty? "The knife is just above your heart," he says before ripping it out. I scream as he bites his own hand, letting his blood flow into the wound to heal it. He tears off a piece of his shirt to wipe away the blood, revealing a glimpse of his well-toned body. I swallow, then divert my gaze from his body to his eyes, which find the mark over my heart. "It is you," he says, filled with remorse as his gaze holds mine. "I knew it was you the moment I laid eyes on you." Then, suddenly, his lips are on mine, igniting a fire inside me.
