It all started with that stupid bet they made when they were younger.
Kamiya Tsurugi and Mikuni Alicien sat around the dinner table, with Jeje wrapped around the latter's neck. They ate their meals in silence, the fluorescent lights above colouring the room a sickly yellow, just the soft 'clinks' of their cutlery knocking against their plates echoing through the room. They both ate their meals in silence. That is, until Tsurugi opened his mouth.
"Let's play a game Kuni-chan!"
Mikuni continued twirling his spaghetti around his fork, not bothering to meet his roommate's gaze. "A game? Perhaps we should play fetch. Seems befitting for a dog like you."
Tsurugi clicked his tongue in disapproval. "How mean of you, treating your dear friend this way-"
"We're not friends." Mikuni corrected.
"Yea, yea. I was thinking that we could have a little bet."
Oh? Now his attention was piqued.
"You have my interest. Continue." Mikuni looked up. His amber eyes meeting Tsurugi's yellow ones.
A mischievous glint sparkled in Tsurugi's eyes. "Aren't you tired of always hating each other? Let's add some love to our friendship! We'll try to make the other fall head over heels for them within this year. But, of course, whoever confesses their love first is the ultimate loser."
The blonde remained silent, considering the stakes of partaking in Tsurugi's game. "One year from now." He glances at the calendar. "That's on the 14th of February." Tsurugi nods, "Valentine's Day! Perfect day to end the game!"
Mikuni felt his Servamp's eyes on him, silently pleading for him to turn down the offer, as if he already knew this whole thing would end in tragedy. But he didn't listen, and looking back at it, maybe he should have. "So the first one to fall in love loses and will be considered the lesser of the two of us?"
"Those are the rules! Don't cry if you lose, m'kay Kuni-chan?" Tsurugi stands up, his hand outstretched towards him. A smirk plastered to his face, and Mikuni was determined to wipe it off.
Standing up, he shook Tsurugi's hand, officially starting their bet.
"May the best player win."
364 days till the end of the game

"Back out of the game while you still can." Mikuni stood with his back against the wall. Last night, he devised a plan to swoop Kamiya Tsurugi off his feet and was ready to execute it. Jeje stood beside him, urging his Eve to back out for his own good. Mikuni gave him an irritated glare. The monster who destroyed his family was trying to advise what was best for him? Like hell was he going to listen. The sound of footsteps down the hallway interrupted him from spiting his Servamp. After living with this bastard for three years, identifying him from his footsteps was a no-brainer— time to implement his plan.
"Man, work is hard today.... maybe I should just bum around the office. Yea, I'll do that." Lost in thought, Tsurugi wandered the corridor, not paying attention, not realising Mikuni's presence.
He stuck his foot out and waited for his partner to waltz into his trap. As expected, the unsuspecting Tsurugi tripped over his foot and stumbled forwards. As he was seconds away from colliding with the floor, Mikuni swooped in to catch him. His hand around his waist, their faces inches apart. For a second, Mikuni saw Tsurugi's flustered look flash across his face before registering the situation and resuming his usual cocky facade. "Oh my! Who knew you were so gentlemanly! Saving little me before I damage my handsome face! I could fall for you right now!"
