The fire

We arrive at the house and once we get out of the engine we quickly realise how big the fire actually is, it was bigger than most of the fires we put out. It's 8:30am and we don't know how long this house has been burning for, it was a neighbour that called in so this means the people inside could be sleeping not knowing there's a huge fire or dead and I'm really hoping we don't have any fatalities but from what it looks like I'd be surprised if there is any survivors at all.
Andy looks at me and says "the structure looks too unstable for us to go inside, I'm scared that if I let someone inside to begin putting out the fire that the building will collapse. I want you and warren to begin spraying the flames from outside of the building, I'll go and attach the hoses to the hydrant. Make sure no one goes in that building bishop, I'm I clear?" I look at Andy and nod "clear captain, no one goes in the house" I say and andy nods then leaves with the hoses.

Once we had the water turned on me and warren began tackling the flames from outside of the building however it wasn't doing much, the fire kept spreading and getting bigger. I was scared we where just going to have to let it burn itself out but something told me andy wouldn't let that happen. "Captain I need to go in it's pointless tackling the fire from out here it's not doing anything, if I get hurt or anything like that it's on me I'm choosing to go in-"I say but andy interrupts "no bishop no one goes in you heard what I said earlier." I sigh "andy I have to go in, there could be people inside still alive that need saving like I said whatever happens in there is on me not you me." I say "bishop I said no, I'm not letting myself loose a firefighter because she thought she could be a hero in a massive house fire. I'm sorry maya but I refuse to loose my best friend because she's too stubborn to see that we can't do anything in this situation" Andy says firmly and right as she finishes her sentence we hear a scream from inside the house, it's not a usual scream of adult fear it's a child's scream of pure terror. There's a child in that house alive and terrified, I have to go in. Without saying anything and without hesitation I run inside the building I could hear Andy yelling for me telling me to stand down but I just ignore her, there's a child's life at stake here and I'm not letting them die, not today.

I rush upstairs and begin shouting "if you hear me I need you to scream again, I'm a firefighter I'm here to help" after a minute of waiting for the scream, I hear nothing so I begin searching each room quickly.
First the bathroom - no one.
Second a bed room- 2 bodies, I check for their pulses but they didn't have one.
Third another bed room- no one
Fourth a child's room- I couldn't see anyone at first but just as I was leaving the room I saw a small figure curled up in a ball in the corner of the room. I rush over to the child and say "hi my names maya, I'm a firefighter I need to get you out of here okay?" The child looks up at me, it's a little girl she looks around the age of 7-8 years old and she's extremely scared. She doesn't say anything but she nods "okay I'm going to lift you up, I need to close your eyes as tight as you can and keep you face hidden beside my neck, could you do that for me?" I ask and once again she nods her head.
Without hesitation I pick her up and she does exactly what I asked her to do, with her in my arms I sprint down the stairs and as I was rushing out of the door the house collapsed behind me.

I did it. The little girl is safe, that's all that matters.

Once I got the girl to the aid car a very angry Andy came storming over to me "maya I told you not to go into that house multiple times and you completely ignored me. I don't tell you not to go into a fire for no reason, those are rules set in order to keep yourself and the rest of the team safe and you completely went against my orders! What on earth where you thinking?! You could've died! Maya don't you realise that, you. Could. Have. Died." Andy shouts, I look at her and say "I'm sorry Andy but I wasn't risking losing a child that I knew I could save" Andy looks at me and says "no you didn't know you could save her, bishop you are so lucky that both you and that little girl are okay don't you understand that. You heard someone scream and I get that it's instinct for firefighters to run in to save someone especially a child from a fire however you where ordered to not go inside of that house but you chose to go against that and I as your captain have to suspend you now because that was such an idiotic move maya, I love you but you have to understand that when we are at work I'm not your best friend I am your captain, your boss Therefore you need to listen to me whilst at fires such as this one because I cannot risk losing a firefighter on my watch, I can't risk losing my best friend. So your suspended for a month starting tomorrow so go and check on that girl, she's just lost both her parents and her home so go and talk with her and if she'll let you give her a hug she'll need it" I don't say anything I just nod and walk over to the aid car where she was sat.

"Hey kid I'm not sure if you really saw my face in the fire but I'm maya I was the firefighter that got you out of the house, how you feeling?" I ask her she looks up at me and says quietly "my throat hurts" I nod "yeah that'll be from the smoke you breathed in, would you like some water?" She just shakes her head "okay well um could you tell me your name?" I ask hoping we can get some idea of who this little girl is "im Hayley" she says still talking quietly. I smile and say "that's an awesome name, how old are you Hayley?" She looks at me and says "I'm 8" I don't say much I just nod and smile.
After a few minutes of silence Hayley looks up at me and says "I want my mommy" this absolutely breaks my heart, I was the one who found her mom in her bed next to Hayley's dad both of them where dead. "Um why don't we take you on a little drive to the hospital to see one of my friends, just to make sure you're okay and then you and I will have a little talk okay?" Once again she just nods "alright do you want me to ride with you in the back?" She looks at me and nods "alright" I say as Travis starts driving to the hospital.
