On October 31, 1693, in Salem, Massachusetts, Thackery Binx and his young daughter, Catherine witnessed his little sister, Emily, being whisked away to the woods by the Sanderson sisters.
Three witches named Winifred, Sarah, and Mary.
Thackery confronts the witches but fails to save Emily and her life force is drained, making the witches young again.
After that, Thackery and Catherine are transformed into a black cat by the witches, cursed to live forever with Thackery's guilt for not saving Emily.
After discovering the children missing, the townsfolk arrest the sisters and sentence them to be hanged for the murder of Thackery, Catherine, and Emily.
Before their execution, Winifred casts a curse that will resurrect the sisters during a full moon on All Hallows' Eve if a virgin lights the Black Flame Candle in their cottage.
Thackery and Catherine decide to guard the cottage so no one can bring the witches back to life.

Elizabeth, Ruth, and Audrey are walking in the woods, getting herbs for their mothers. "What a very happy birthday for us!" Audrey said, twirling around.
Audrey's cat Paris dances with her, meowing happily.
"I wonder what they have planned for us this year" Valerie said, chuckling at Audrey. "Probably something vital" Elizabeth and Valerie chuckled as Audrey gasped, tears running down her face.
Elizabeth and Valerie looked at Audrey confused.
"Audrey, what's wrong?" Elizabeth asked as they walked up to her. They gasped as they saw them hanged, swaying with the wind, rope on their necks.
Lifeless.
"No... No! Mother!" Elizabeth screamed, dropping her basket, running up to her dead hanging body.
Valerie ran to her mother's body, crying her eyes out. "Mom!" Valerie cried at her mother's feet. "Mommy! no!" Audrey cried, dropping to the floor.
"M-mommy, please don't leave" Audrey cried, wanting her back.
Paris rubbed her face against Audrey's shoulder, trying to comfort her. As they balled their eyes out, Winnifred's book opened, flipping its pages.
"Elizabeth? What's the book doing?" Audrey asked, wiping her tears, watching the pages flip. The book finally stops. Elizabeth picks the book up, wiping her tears.
Audrey picks up Paris for comfort, kissing her head.
