It was just another ordinary day for Carlitos and Achilles. They woke up, brushed their teeth, and got ready for school, just a stone's throw away from their home in Portal de Las Colinas."Come on, Carlitos. We don't want to be late for school!" Achilles called to his younger brother. Carlitos was busy lacing up his shoes, his small fingers working diligently.
"Okay, Achilles, I'm ready!" Carlitos replied in his broken English, still practicing the language that was as foreign to him as the spaghetti they ate for dinner the night before.
The school day went on as usual. Carlitos was having fun, but he also felt strange. He noticed his neighbor, Mr. Rodriguez, behaving weirdly - twitching and growling like an angry dog. But nobody seemed to notice or care.
After school, Carlitos shared his observations with Achilles. "Achilles, something's wrong with Mr. Rodriguez," he said.
Achilles just laughed, ruffling Carlitos's hair. "Don't worry, kiddo. He's just playing around." But Carlitos wasn't convinced. "No, Achilles, he's not playing. He's... scary."
Despite his brother's reassurances, Carlitos couldn't shake off the eerie feeling. That night, he lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, and recalling the sight of Mr. Rodriguez.
The next day was Saturday - no school. Carlitos and Achilles were playing soccer in their backyard when they saw Mr. Rodriguez again. This time, he was even scarier. His skin was pale, and his eyes were bloodshot.
"Look, Achilles," Carlitos pointed out, his voice shaking. "Look at Mr. Rodriguez."This time, even Achilles couldn't deny the change in their neighbor. Mr. Rodriguez was not his usual self. Achilles felt a cold shiver run down his spine. "Alright, Carlitos, we should go inside," he said.
That night, as the two brothers lay in their beds, they heard a chilling sound from next door - a horrifying mix of a scream and a growl.
"Did you hear that, Achilles?" Carlitos asked, his voice barely a whisper.Achilles, trying to comfort his little brother, responded, "It's probably just the wind, Carlitos. Go back to sleep."
But the truth was, Achilles was just as scared as Carlitos. He had no idea what was happening, but he knew one thing for sure - something was horribly wrong.
Late into the night, they heard a loud crash. It was so loud that it echoed throughout their house, shaking their beds. Carlitos clutched his blanket, and Achilles went pale. They looked at each other, the same fearful thought running through their minds.
"What was that, Achilles?" Carlitos whispered, his eyes wide in terror.Achilles swallowed, mustering up his courage. "I don't know, Carlitos. I don't know."In the ominous silence that followed, the two brothers heard another horrifying sound - the unholy growling was coming from their living room. It sounded like Mr. Rodriguez. Only this time, it was closer. Much closer.
And that's where the first chapter of their nightmare began.
