chapter nine
CHARLIE SAT next to his mom now, both of them playing tic-tac-toe on the kid's menu. He placed his last X in a red crayon with a scoring smile.
"I win again. Mom you suck at this game," he said to her.
Violet looked down at the little boy who was staring up at her with his big brown eyes. "Do I? Or is it that you're so good?"
Charlie crossed his arms and hummed in thought. "You suck," he smiled.
Lila, Sam, and Chris smiled watching the interaction between the 11-year-old and his mother.
"Okay, then."
Charlie leaned over to grab his cup and bit his straw.
Chris reached into his pocket on the inside of his jacket and pulled out three letters. "Mail came," he laid them on the table.
The 3 women found their names on the white envelopes. The moment they saw the handwriting the sisters shared a look.
"His birthday is this weekend," Sam looked at her little brother who held two crayons pretending they were fighting. "He wants to see him," Lila added.
Violet looked down at Charlie and put on her best smile. "Well, he can't. Because we are going to the aquarium, right bud?" She ran her fingers through his brown hair.
Charlie's eyes lit up. "Yup. I really just want to throw Lila into the water," he laughed with a look at his sister.
From the moment Charlie was able to crawl he and Lila have had an ongoing feud.
"Be nice," his dad gave him a small shove to the head.
Violet smiled and gave her daughters a look to move on. Charlie is too young for all of this. It most definitely isn't time to bring him into everything.
Lila bit her lip trying to decide if she should say something. She had an opinion that wasn't anything like her mother's and older sister's. Sam saw the pondering look on her face and kicked her leg.
Lila looked up to get a disapproving look. She shrugged only to get a head shake from Sam.
She sighed and turned to Chris. "She does this every year," she blurted.
Sam turned to her sister, "What did I say?"
Lila ignored her. "It's not fair, mom. He should know his father, no offense Chris," she made sure to consider the man married to her mother. "You are an amazing dad and I'm grateful for everything you've done for my baby brother but it's not like Dad can't do the same if he was given the chance."
Her whole life, Lila had been too attached to her father. For years, Lila would cry and cry until she was in the arms of her father. To catch Lila and Billy apart was very unlikely. Lila always saw the best in her dad even after they found out everything.
