Welcome to the beginning of my new book! This is a project that I've been working towards for a while now and I'm glad to finally have it up and running. Enjoy!
—————Angelina had pushed herself to work all throughout the night on the case she'd be presenting. She was representing a victim of assault who was seeking compensation. It took two cups of coffee, three restarted counterarguments and two breaks for her to finally finish, but it was worth it. It wasn't an achievement that came easily, but regardless she was proud of how far she'd made it throughout the years.
Which is why, as she stood in the four walled, brown and enclosed courtroom, counteracting everything the lawyer claimed, she couldn't help but feel joyous. It didn't feel like people were looking at her silver eyes. They weren't paying attention to the fact that her visual language was braille or the fact that she couldn't move around the room as freely. They didn't care that she was partially blind (although it was a bit way over the "partial" side). It made her even more joyous.
"Your Honor, with all due respect, the opposing counsel's argument is based on flawed assumptions and selective interpretation of the evidence," Angelina asserted confidently, her voice resonating through the courtroom.
The opposing lawyer raised an eyebrow and retorted, "Objection, Your Honor! Counsel is making unfounded allegations without concrete evidence."
Angelina countered swiftly, "Your Honor, I apologize if my statement seemed exaggerated, but the evidence clearly supports my contention. I direct the court's attention to Exhibit A, where it explicitly contradicts the opposing counsel's assertion."
Her focus returned to the judge of whom, leaning forward, interjected, "Sustained. Counsel, proceed, but please stay focused on the facts."
Angelina nodded and continued her argument, expertly dissecting the opposing side's claims. "Thank you, Your Honor. Now, let's examine the witness testimonies. The defense's key witness, Mr. Johnson, conveniently omits crucial details that undermine his credibility. The prosecution's witness, Ms. Smith, provides a more accurate and reliable account, supported by substantial evidence."
As Angelina presented her counterarguments, she skillfully weaved through the legal intricacies, anticipating and addressing potential objections from the opposing counsel. Her words were measured and precise, leaving little room for doubt.
The opposing lawyer, growing visibly frustrated, attempted to redirect the judge's attention. "Your Honor, I object! Counsel is leading the court astray with irrelevant information."
Angelina remained composed, raising an eyebrow as she responded, "Your Honor, my line of argument is directly relevant to the case at hand. I am presenting the inconsistencies in the opposing counsel's narrative to establish reasonable doubt."
The judge considered the objection for a moment before ruling, "Overruled. Counsel, you may proceed."
With a small but confident smile, Angelina continued her persuasive argument, gradually dismantling the opposing lawyer's case. She presented her evidence, cited legal precedents, and delivered her closing statement with conviction, leaving an indelible impression on the courtroom.
"We will meet again on April 24, 2023 for the processing trial and final decision in the ruling. The motion to have the defendant released on bail will be rejected for now as the Counsel displayed a fair argument."
The judged voice bellowed throughout the room, dismissing everyone there. Grabbing her bag and cane, she waited until she could no longer hear intense feet shuffling throughout the room. It was better if she left after everyone else, for their safety as well as her own. The only person she assumed was in the room is her partner, Bethany Lake.
