Water sloshed gently against the shore, the peaceful noise filling Mabel's ears as she walked down the beach. The sun was dipping towards the horizon, but she wasn't eager to go back to the Mystery Shack anytime soon. She loved parties, of course, but the welcome party had gotten a little rowdy when the older kids had started drinking, and Mabel needed a breather. The fresh breeze coming off the lake was a nice change from Robbie and Lee hot boxing themselves in the bathroom.
Mabel didn't have a particular destination on her walk, she had just driven to the lake and got out, hoping for some peace and quiet. But as she walked, her eyes were drawn to a dark shadow coming from the end of the beach. Thoughts of the party slipped away as she got closer, and was now standing at the mouth of a cave.
The opening was only about a foot taller than her, and the inside was dim, so she couldn't tell how deep it was. But it must have been real deep, because there was a steady breeze coming out of it. It was cool and crisp, but carried a very...sweet smell. A bit like overripe berries and sugar. Mabel stepped forward, her curiosity taking the best of her and leading her deeper into the cave. The cave was damp, as all caves are, but it felt different. It was warm, despite the cool breeze, and the water dripping from the ceiling felt...almost sticky? The sweet smell was getting stronger, and Mabel was getting nervous.
The breeze stopped for a moment, and then a torrent of cool air hit her like a wave. It didn't last long, but it left her shaken, and strangely dizzy. The smell was sickeningly sweet now, and it was almost overwhelming. She felt as if her nose had been stuffed with cotton.
"Oh god, bad idea, bad idea." She muttered to herself as she turned and began to stumble back towards the opening. But when she turned, the circle of light seemed much farther than it should have been, and her feet weren't taking her there nearly as fast as she needed them to.
Then she heard something.
It was different then the gently dripping of water from the cave ceiling, or the whistle of the breeze in her ear.
Mabel heard slithering.
And it was coming from behind her.
She whipped around just in time to feel something warm and wet wrap around her ankle and pull. Her foot was yanked out from beneath her and she yelped she hit the floor. Whatever was holding on to her ankle began to pull, and she screamed as it dragged her away from the lake and deeper into the cave. The tunnels went down, down, down, for what felt like miles as she fought and kicked. Her head was spinning, and she had to bite back nausea as she desperately writhed.
And then it stopped.
Whatever was holding her ankle let go, and she heard it slither away. She looked around frantically, but the cave was so dark she couldn't see her own hands in front of her face. She blinked rapidly, trying to fight dizziness. Whatever this smell was must be why she felt like this.
She crawled around slowly, waving her arms wildly until she reached the cave wall. She leaned against it and got to her feet, her eyes finally adjusting to the darkness. There was a faint glow coming from around a corner in front of her, and despite her best instincts, she began to shuffle toward it. She turned the corner and gasped, hr eyes widening.
