Somewhere 2000+ years before the events of High School DxD
Everything was on fire, buildings collapsing and civilians were massacred left and right by Angels, Fallen Angels and Devils alike. On all fronts, the people of Irialandia were getting attacked on three sides by those who wanted to subdue them. The battle was going horribly for everyone concerned but the people were fighting on against impossible odds.
The Great Holy War, was originally a three-way deadlock between the three Biblical Factions until the Irialandian kingdom decided to enter with the original intent to re-establish the status quo as even if it wasn't by enough, they were indirectly affected by the war which gave them enough reason to intervene.
Everything went in Irialandia's favour as they had superiority in every domain: Economics, Military Logistics, Scientific Research, and the list could go on and on. Individually, the Three Factions had no chance against such might which showed itself to be more apparent when they almost managed to capture Lucifaad, the capital of the Underworld.
However, something horrible happened, one that might have sealed the Irialandians' fate forever. During the offensive, one Irialandian warrior committed unnecessary atrocities against the Devils. They massacred civilians and soldiers alike for no reason and that struck fear not only in the traumatized Devils but also in the two other factions.
In a twist of fate, they set their differences aside albeit temporarily to launch an offensive against Irialandia which surprisingly turned out to be successful. This temporary truce and the fall of Irialandia marked the end of the Great Holy War.
The treaty ended with the establishment of a Devil colony as compensation for the vilest massacre orchestrated by a member of Irialandia's Big Three, a Lightbane. Because of the sins of one, the entire population had to pay. They were abused, exploited, and overall mistreated by the demonic settlers. Their pleas for a fair treaty fell on deaf ears not just the Devils' but the entire supernatural world. Their population in the territory where once stood the mighty kingdom decreased while the Devil's saw an increase in Irialandia.
Of course, there were some insurrections here and there but all ended quite quickly which gave a blow to Irialandian morale. Until one day which leads us to today, around 50 years after the war, the Satans at the time, the Original Satans have finally reached a unanimous conclusion concerning the 'Lightbane issue'. A disastrous solution, one that would shape the supernatural world, forever.
A woman and a man were running away amidst the screams of their people, everything around them was set ablaze and mutilated corpses lay everywhere. Women were being gang-raped and men were being used as fodders and test subjects for Fallen Angel magicks. There were even some children that were forcefully taken to serve Fallen Angels or Devils depending on which side caught them.
The woman was carrying a basket while the man carried two. Her name was Elara Lightbane and the man's was Caelum Lightbane, they were both husband and wife, and the baskets contained the infants of the couple. Triplets: Two boys and a girl. Their concern was to look for a safe place for their babies, the remaining joys of their lives after the hell they and their brethren had been through for decades.
"W-What did we do to deserve any of this? Oh Goddess I-Iria, please come to our rescue. The children...The women, it is horrible..." Elara tried to appeal to the Goddess of Irialandians which caused her husband to click his tongue, "She will not come Elara! Don't you get it? She is probably closing her damn eyes like she did in the war all those years ago!" Caelum replied which earned him a death glare from his wife but he was not fazed by it at all and even kept pushing it.
