Karina and Onyx

"Fuck!" She exclaimed, throwing the useless old book she had been studying across the room at alarming speed. Three days! She's been working for three whole days on that stupid book to try and help with her spell casting, but for THREE DAYS she'd been hopelessly fucking up every. single. time. Karina sank into the leather chair behind her, rubbing her hands over her face. 

Onyx appeared around the corner, his black eyes sparkling with mischief. "You do know that book is over 100 years old, right?" 

"Save it," she snapped, leaning forward to take the glass of water he offered. "Aren't you supposed to be the best spell caster in the world? Why are my spells still useless with you as my teacher!?" 

He shrugged nonchalantly, picking up the book from the floor to place it back on the end table beside her. "Spell casting isn't for everyone, Kara, some people can do it and some people can't." 

"You don't understand! I have to do this, Onyx, spell casting has been in my family for generations! I can't be the one to end the long line of powerful spell casters!" Tears welled up in her eyes and she looked out the stained glass window to avoid his gaze. 

Onyx's face softened and he sighed, kneeling in front of her. He'd watched as every day she'd push herself to exhaustion trying to make something-anything happen from that book and his teachings. She had potential in the aspect that she didn't give up easily, but he wasn't sure she was magical. "Kara," he placed a hand on her knee, "you need to take a break." 

"What part of-"

He placed a finger over her lips to silence her. "We'll return to the lesson in a little bit, but you pressuring yourself the way you are is only hindering whatever abilities you have. Stand up." She did so. Onyx guided her away from the chair and into the open space of the cozy library, moving to stand behind her, his breath fanning over her ear. "Magic is fluid, like water," conjuring a small wave of blue light that flowed around their arms. "When the host is too stiff," he tensed his stance and the magic fizzled out and disappeared, "it cannot flow. You need to relax; feel the energy surging around you and use it." Karina sighed and nodded, closing her eyes so that all she could do was feel Onyx behind her. "Good. Magic is all around us, reach out and grab it." He lifted her arm up and she closed her hand. "Open your eyes." 

She did so and released her grip, a green light illuminating from her palm. Her eyes widened and she turned to face her teacher. "I did it!" 

"Indeed," he chuckled, "perhaps I'll make a caster out of you yet. For now, you need to rest." 

"Rest?! How could I possibly rest now after something has finally happened?! We've been working for three days to see any sign of improvement; you've put as much effort into this as I have, I thought you would want to further this progress!" Karina's shoulders tensed up and the magic flickered out, causing her to scowl. 

Onyx took her hands in his and squeezed, "I know you want to progress as quick as possible, but part of being a spell caster is knowing when you need to rest and renew your energy for the next battle. We know you have magic and now we know how to draw it out; that's enough for now." 

"No, it's not," she argued, tearing her hands away from his. "We're so close, Onyx, I can feel it! If we just work another day, I could be caught up with everyone else!" 

"You're going to over-work yourself, Karina, I've seen people do it before; we're not giving up, merely resting to make sure you do more next session." 

His words were pure logic that she couldn't argue with, but she honestly wasn't sure if she would be able to relax after seeing that amount of progress after working so hard. "If we're being honest, I'm not sure if I know how."
