I take a deep breath, trying to clear my mind. I was always so nervous every time I had to do an interview on a talk show. Well, I just get nervous around interviewers in general. It felt like being interrogated in front of millions of people. Most of the time the questions aren't even that great. They ask about your love life or about someone else's or the latest gossip. It was quite nauseating. That probably comes with being a minority, or just being a woman in the industry. I don't know, but this interview in particular made me extra nervous. It made sense, though. I'm getting interviewed on a book about my old life with D.N.A. That's the juiciest type of gossip you can get. I take another deep breath as I hear my intro come on. I can't help but smile at this one. It wasn't any of my new singles. I told them to go old school, and they delivered.
Cause you're my stereo, stereo, stereo soldier
Oh Oh, Oh Oh
I had a huge grin on my face as I walked down the short stairs to get to the American interviewer, Ellen DeGeneres. I gave her a big hug, which wasn't really hard considered how tiny Ellen is. I looked around as I sat down on the white sofa chair. There were fans of D.N.A. out in the audience from the looks of it. It was weird since I hadn't seen that in a while. It's very easy to distinguish them. They had colorful outfits on and one fan even had the exact replica of the outfit I wore in Wings. It was pretty awesome. I always liked that outfit.
"Wow, you guys really went way back for that one!" I laughed, taking the cup of water from the side of the sofa chair. "You all look fantastic." I tell the audience. I point to the girl wearing the Wings outfit. "Look, she even has my outfit on from the Wings video!"
"They were all lined up to see you. Been here since six in the morning! Now, you don't see that happening here pretty often. But how are you? You've been having a great year?" said Ellen.
"Yeah! It's been a roller coaster. I heard that my new single, Black Magic, is still going strong at no. 1 on iTunes!"
"And no. 1 on the Billboard Charts for five weeks in row!"
"It's pretty surreal." I take another sip of water. I tend to do that a lot when I get nervous. Thank God they had a pitcher at my side. I think my manager, Marty, set that up.
"And you're ending the year with a big surprise to all your old school fans, and your current ones with your new book!" She takes out the book from her side table. It had all of us on the cover wearing white. I thought it was the best cover for this book. Not a lot agreed with me on that one, but it did have a fun little poster inside from some photos we never used so I guess that makes up for it. It's old and new at the same time.
The crowd cheered at the sight of it. It warmed my heart. After all that book is literally my life.
"So what made you decide to write a book about D.N.A.? Why now?" asked Ellen. "Why not when D.N.A. was at its peak?"
"Well, it wouldn't have been right to write it back then when all the wounds were still fresh. I feel like the fans of D.N.A. and I have healed well enough that I could write about it in this book and show my side of the story."
"What can we expect in it?"
That was the big question. Most assumed it was just me bashing on my old band mates, but what would I have to gain from that? Others didn't think it was necessary to write a whole book about it, especially since I could have just written an essay and publish it in a magazine. But I knew that this had to be a book. That the stories were too long to fit in a magazine. These stories can't be censored. And that's why I chose to write a book.
"A lot of things. I've had this thought going on for a while, and this is just my side of the story. We all have sides. I just decided to publish my side."
"Do the others know about you wanting to publish this? Were they mad at all?"
I bit my lip. It was a nervous tick I had when I knew I needed to lie. I haven't spoken to either of the girls since the break up. My management tried to get a hold of them, but I was out of luck. It wouldn't have mattered anyways. They said that I was allowed to write about it. But for good publicity I had to lie and say that they thought it was fine.
"Yeah, at least that's what they tell me."
"You didn't speak to them directly about it?"
Shit.
"Even with the time that went by, it's still hard to really talk about it you know? And it's hard to get a hold of them too. But luckily we got a hold of the girls to give their thumbs up."
Ellen nodded, quickly moving on to the next question.
"The title's pretty straight forward. 'D.N.A.: A Story of How A Band Broke the Hearts of Millions'. Why did you go with that title?"
"To be honest, that title was a joke at first with my editor. But it stuck on with me, so yeah."
It was a stupid title. I could have been a lot more subtle with it, but I think at this point with the history of D.N.A., straight forward is really the way to go. That's what we were. What we are. It's how everything went to hell in the first place...
...
Ten Years Ago
I was fifteen when Jesy and I decided we wanted to be in a band together. And what better band to have than one with your best friend since primary school in it? But we knew we couldn't do it alone. There were only two of us, and the sound we wanted required at least four or five people if we couldn't find someone to sing and play an instrument. It would suck a bit though to have a lot of people in a band. Too crowded. But whatever.
Jesy had guitarist claimed the first time we even decided to officially do this band thing. Jesy had insisted I play bass, but I didn't think I could have handled it with my lack of confidence and shy nature. I decided to go with playing the drums. I've only ever played in the marching band for a semester, but my music teacher helped me get into the swing of it. I was musically inclined after all. Everything I played came quickly to me. I could have probably played anything. But the drums were in the back and I wouldn't have had to interact much.
And so we held auditions for a lead singer, keyboardist, and a bassist...
