I woke to David's hand stroking my cheek. "Morning beautiful," He smiled. Giving me a kiss.
"What time is it?" I mumbled, sleep-making my words blend together. Gazing into his sunflower eyes.
"Time for breakfast," He laughed.
I frowned, sticking my bottom lip out. "But it's so warm in here,"
"Not as warm as my arms!" David reached under the covers and yanked me out of bed. Holding me like a damsel in distress.
I wrapped my arms around his neck, he was right.
"I knew you would agree," He carried me downstairs, still in my nightgown.
David gently set me down in a chair, placing a plate of food in front of me.
"Are the kids up, too?" I asked, still half asleep.
"Sana and Cori are at school. You slept half the day," He talked around a mouthful of hash browns.
I chewed mine and swallowed. "Is it too late to go to Ellie's Sweetshop for ice cream?"
"I live by your motto. It's NEVER too late for ice cream,"
When we had finished eating, David and I walked hand in hand to the car. He pressed the button on our keys that unlocked the car and held my door open for me.
"Thanks," I smiled, holding his gaze.
David closed the door behind me and got in the driver's seat.
He looked at the time on his phone. "Ellie's shop is open until five. It's three pm, so we have plenty of time,"
I nodded, strapping myself in. David did the same and turned the keys to start the car.
It was a quiet drive to Ellie's. Dave and I were both lost in thought. Me thinking about sleep and him about ice cream.
Several highway signs and trees later we reached the edge of Barelos, turning into the sweetshop's parking lot.
"You still sleepy, Princess." He laughed, snapping me out of my daze.
I turned to him, "Yeah." I could barely hear my voice.
"Come on. You can't stay in dreamland forever." David kissed me, his lips warm and sweet.
The kiss somehow brought me out of sleep mode and suddenly I was wide awake.
He must be magic to have lips that wake you up like that.
I got out of the car and rested my head on his shoulder as we walked up the steps to the shop door.
Ellie's belle rang, alerting her to a new customer. "Amoni!" Someone called from the back of the shop.
A woman in a rose pink apron appeared behind the counter. "I see you brought David Bladoro! Such a handsome couple!" Ellie always insisted she serve us herself since we were good friends in high school. That's where I met David, fourteen years ago. When life was a dream, now it's a poem I can't seem to make sense of.
We examined the different flavors of ice cream.
"I'll have tiramisu and sea salt caramel, please." I said, pointing to the different flavors behind the glass.
"I'll have the same," He took out a fifty and handed it to Ellie.
David and I had our first date here and ordered the same exact flavors. That's when we knew we were meant to be.
Ellie took two cones from her stack and scooped our ice cream for us.
"There we are, two cones for my favorite customers," She smiled.
We sat down at an empty table with a tablecloth covered in white daisies. It was unusually busy in here for a Monday.
That's when I felt someone tap me on the shoulder. They handed me a card and whispered something in my ear that sounded something like "Don't be late" It was hard to hear over everyone else. I looked over at David and realized the same thing had happened to him. I turned to thank whoever had given me the card but there was no one there.
