Liam had just taken an offer to study abroad, abroad meaning he was going to study in Australia. He had always dreamed of moving to Australia and when he saw the chance to apply to study at Monash University in Melbourne. He was going to be studying Nursing, something he had wanted to do for many years now. He wanted to help people, in a medical sort of way but he didn’t really get the grades to be a doctor, so nursing was the next best thing and he was happy with that. He had everything organized, he was renting a nice apartment in the city center a short walk from the campus, he had gotten a job in a small coffee shop in his building and was looking forward to living on his own.

Liam’s POV

“Liam!, have you finished packing yet!?”

“Yes mum!, I’m just finishing a few things then I’m all done” Liam called out from upstairs.

I made my way downstairs to find my mum sitting on the couch flicking through an old photo album. “What are you looking at mum?” I say, sitting down next to her.

“Some old photos, of when you were a baby, you were so innocent back then and so dependent on me and your father but now, your moving so far away, I’m scared Liam.”

“Mum don’t be scared, be happy for me, I’m going to be doing what I love and ill make friends an fit in really well, Australians love English accents, I promise.”

“I know hunny, but its just still daunting, my little boy is all grown up, I knew this day would come soon enough.”

I hugged my mum and sat there for another half an hour looking through old photos, laughing our heads off. I loved my mum so much, she has always been there for me, when I realized I was gay she was the most supportive person I could have had. It was tough coming out at first but she was always there to talk to. I was flying out tomorrow morning so I wanted to get some sleep, saying goodnight to my parents I headed up to bed.

I awoke the next morning at 4am, my flight was at 8 and being international I had to check in 2 hours beforehand. I rolled over to see my bags packed and clothes set out for the flight. I showered and got dressed then headed down to see my parents waiting for me in the kitchen.

“Morning hunny” my mother greeted me as I entered the kitchen.

“Morning mum, dad, are we ready to go?”

“Sure son, aren’t you going to have something to eat first?” My dad asked

“Nah, I’m not hungry right now, if I want something ill get it at the airport later, I have time.”

“Okay son, well lets get going then”

I grabbed my stuff from upstairs and packed the car, pulling out of the driveway I knew this was going to be the last time I saw this house for a while, it was a little sad. We found a park at the airport and headed in. I checked in, got rid of my luggage and we made our way to the departure lounge.

The call came over the loudspeaker signaling it was time to board, I said my final goodbyes to my parents and made my way onto the plane. I had a window seat, with no one in the middle and an older woman in the aisle, she told me it was because she would be making quite a few bathroom breaks during the flight and did not want to disturb anyone by having to make them move each time if she were to not sit in the aisle. The flight was direct to Melbourne, which I was thankful for as I was a little scared of having to stop over someone incase I got lost and missed my connecting flight. 20 hours later I found myself a little tired but excited to have finally arrived. I collected my luggage and found a taxi bay to order a taxi to take me to my apartment. I had only seen photos online so I was keen to see the real thing. After about a 30-minute taxi ride which took me right through the city, taking in the amazing views and city life I was at my apartment building. I saw the coffee shop on the corner below my building where I would be working; I thought I should get my stuff upstairs before introducing myself. Entering the lobby I was greeted by an older gentleman who told me he was the manager of the building and if I had any questions to not hesitate to give him a call, handing me his card and my keys he took me up to my room, which was on the third level, room 3C.
