Omniscient POV

Flashback- Eighteen Years Ago...

The cool night air whispered through the towering trees as Hayley Marshall paced along the balcony of the Abattoir, trying to calm her restless daughter. Hope Mikaelson fussed in her arms, her tiny hands grasping at the air as if searching for something unseen.

"Come on, Hope. You're usually better at this than me," Hayley muttered under her breath. She barely had time to breathe these days, balancing the chaos of being a hybrid and a new mom.

A soft knock at the door made her freeze. She turned, clutching Hope closer to her chest. The knock came again, more insistent this time.

"Hayley? It's me."

That voice—Hayley's heart dropped into her stomach. She hadn't heard it in years, not since the night Sydney Graham had vanished with nothing but a voicemail saying she'd "figure things out."

"What the hell..." Hayley muttered before yanking the door open. Standing there, leaning against the frame like she hadn't been gone for over half a decade, was Sydney. Her short afro framed her face, and her dark eyes held a mix of fear and determination that Hayley hadn't seen since they were kids.

"Hey, Marshmallow," Sydney said with a sheepish smile. "Or should I say... Momma?"

"What the hell are you doing here?" Hayley demanded, stepping forward and shielding Hope instinctively.

"Wow. Nice to see you too. Is this how you greet your best friend?" Sydney teased, but her voice wavered.

"Best friend? Last I checked, best friends don't disappear for six years without a word!" Hayley snapped. "You ran off with some guy—what was his name again? Johnny? Jacob? You didn't even call—"

"James," Sydney corrected quietly. "His name was James. And he's... He's the love of my life."

Hayley laughed bitterly. "Sure. Like the others were, right?"
