Chapter One

Ellie

"I know you love me, Jordan. And it's only going to be for a few months while I sort out what I really want to do." I'm looking at the love of my life, with his dark floppy hair and startling blue eyes. Now filled with tears. I can tell he's trying not to cry. After all who wouldn't?

"I just don't get why now, all of a sudden. I thought you were going to wait or at least wait for me." I can see he's trying to hold back the tears and it's breaking my heart too. But what can I say? I hated my job in IT, sure it pays a bucket load of money but it's so stressful that I woke up one morning and decided enough was enough.

Hi, I'm Ellie and I'm twenty-six years of age. The man standing opposite me is Jordan. He's my boyfriend of ten years. We go back way longer than that though, in fact since our school days.

I met Jordan when I was thirteen. He was new to our school, Alderman Elementary here in our small home town of Bridgeton. To say he took my breath away at such a tender age is not a lie. I didn't know what hit me when he came and sat at the desk next to me that start of the new school year, in September. It was a full on crush at first sight.

Jordan was shy, very shy. We of course all knew each other having grown up in our home town, which by the way is The Best town in the world. Only now I've grown up a bit, I suddenly have a travel bug and want to travel. Jordan doesn't see why now, when our lives are so perfect and so on track.

Back to Bridgeton. It's beautiful, I mean with a capital B type of beautiful. Right in the heart of the town with its stunning colourful houses surrounding a lake, is a very ornate iron bridge that spans the lake, hence the name.

I've lived here all my life with my parents, my older brother Harnett and my younger sister, Frankie short for Francesca. Nobody calls her that though, she's always been known as Frankie.

Jordan sat next to me that first day of school term in September and I couldn't believe my luck. Okay perhaps luck had nothing to do with it, since there weren't any other seats or desks for him except the one next to mine. Then he turned and he smiled at me. My heart fluttered and I could have been accused of drooling some.

I never in a million years thought that this boy who already had I'm going to be popular written on his head, would even glance my way. Not with my mousey-brown hair and ordinary hazel eyes. In fact, there wasn't anything special about me growing up. I was flat chested, actually, I still am and I was and still am a bit of a nerdy-geek.

But he did, the Adonis actually turned to me and smiled a megawatt smile that caused me to gape and drop the pen I had in my hand. "If we can all get ourselves together please." Demanded our teacher back then. Mr Smythe was our science teacher and I really hated science so it went without saying, he was my least favourite teacher of all time.

"But we've got everything going for us Ellie." Jordan's voice is now breaking and I'm looking into his hypnotic blue eyes, wondering myself if I've made the right decision. If I don't leave now to try to do something new and get away from this rat race of a life that it has become, I know I never will.
