Initially, she'd thought the little girl had awoken earlier wanting to be fed, but now that she was fully awake, Dynasty could hear this crying that startled her awake was different.
This was no hunger cry.
She turned on the lamp and approached the gray crib, gasping when she saw her child's face. "Oh my God?"
She picked Issei up quickly and turned to her husband who was still asleep. "Michael."
He'd recently started a new sleep medication, and it seemed to be working for him, so she wasn't surprised that he hadn't heard Issei's weeping.
A few seconds passed before she called his name again—this time louder than the first. Michael jerked awake lightly, bringing his hand up to shield his eyes from the room light as Dynasty flicked it on.
He sat up rubbing the sleep out of his eyes and squinted in their direction. When his vision cleared, he watched his wife lower the small blanket from Issei's nose revealing the blood on it and her floral-printed onesie.
"What the hell?" He moved the comforter from his legs.
"I don't know, take her." She handed her off to him before he could stand and rushed downstairs to the bathroom.
Michael lifted a clean part of the blanket to her face trying to wipe the spots that Dynasty had missed clean of the red liquid. This wasn't her first nosebleed; she'd had exactly two other nosebleeds in the previous month.
They had her seen by the family doctor and after he was done checking her, he concluded that it was likely due to dry air aggravating her nose. He prescribed a nasal spray to see if that would help and told them to bring her to the hospital if it seemed like it wasn't working.
Both Michael and Dynasty were sure that the problem had been fixed since her nose hadn't bled in a few weeks, but here they were again. Back at square one.
Dynasty returned with a cool rag and washed her face completely before giving it to Michael to hold against her nose.
"Do you think she's hot maybe?" Michael looked up at his wife.
She placed her hand on Issei's forehead to check. She was definitely on the warmer side, so she unzipped her onesie and pulled it down off of her arms.
As the fabric came off, Michael took notice of a medium-sized purplish-red mark at the top of her upper back and a smaller one on her lower. He turned her body for Dynasty to see and the two exchanged worried looks while inspecting them.
"Were they there when you gave her a bath?"
"No, I would've said something otherwise." Dynasty lightly traced her thumb over the bigger bruise.
Issei's little cry had gotten louder since they awoke which had them beyond concerned. All of Michael's attempts to soothe her were unsuccessful as the six-month-old seemed to be inconsolable.
They shared a look, quickly understanding each other and Dynasty disappeared into the closet to change out of her nightgown.
Michael switched Issei to his other leg and began shaking it just a little, still trying his best to calm the distressed baby down.
